Tissue engineering is a promising approach for articular cartilage regeneration as no satisfactory treatment is actually available for cartilage, partly due to the very limited self-healing capability of this tissue. To successfully induce a cartilaginous ...

In spite of decades of research, no feasible method for obtaining sufficient numbers of uncommitted muscle stem cells (MuSCs) for therapy of degenerative muscle diseases exists. One of the most fundamental problems associated with stem cell therapy of musc ...

Emerging 3D printing technology permits innovative approaches to manufacture cartilage scaffolds associated with layer-by-layer mechanical property adaptation. However, information about gradients of mechanical properties in human articular cartilage is li ...

Tissue decellularisation has gained much attention in regenerative medicine as an alternative to synthetic materials. In decellularised tissues, biological cues can be maintained and provide cellular environments still unmet by synthetic materials. Supercr ...

Several approaches to combine bone substitutes with biomolecules, cells or mechanical loading have been explored as an alternative to the limitation and risk-related bone auto- and allo-grafts. In particular, human bone progenitor cells seeded in porous po ...

Despite the development of hydrogels with high mechanical properties, insufficient adhesion between these materials and biological surfaces significantly limits their use in the biomedical field. By controlling toughening processes, we designed a composite ...

Hierarchical porous structures have been gathering interest in different fields owing to their unique properties associated with their multi-scale features. The observation of natural materials brought new insights into the functionality of cellular materi ...

Adaptive numerical method algorithms are presented for the numerical simulation of the hysteretic behaviour of nonlinear viscous and bilinear oil dampers within a finite element program for nonlinear dynamic analysis of frame structures under earthquake ex ...

The performance of force-based and displacement-based seismic assessment methods for the life-safety limit state check of out-of-plane loaded unreinforced masonry walls is evaluated on the basis of refined numerical simulations. For this purpose, a discret ...

A particle-based numerical manifold method (PNMM) is developed to investigate rock fracturing behavior under dynamic loading. The basic idea of PNMM is to represent the microstructure of rock with a group of particles and to simulate the macroscopic behavi ...

Articular cartilage is a soft tissue showing inelastic properties. Under cyclic loading, inelastic materials may dissipate mechanical energy into heat. In knee cartilage, due to an intrinsic reduced heat convection related to its avascularity, a local temp ...
