Traditional analog front-ends for biomedical signal acquisitions operate at very low frequencies (Hz-range) and are severely affected by flicker and environmental noise, which degrade the quality of low-frequency signals, thereby reducing the signal-to-noi ...

Air traffic noise emissions are responsible for a significant part of the overall environmental noise, especially in the vicinity of airports. Exposure to environmental noise is known to negatively impact health and to be associated with cardiovascular dis ...

As humans spend most of their time indoors, indoor air quality (IAQ) significantly impacts their health. In parallel, building ventilation consumes significant energy, contributing to climate change. However, the relationships between the building ventilat ...

Aerosol transmission remains a major challenge for the control of respiratory viruses. To date, prevention strategies include masks, vaccinations, physical distancing, travel restrictions, and lockdowns. Such measures are effective but come with heavy soci ...

The fundamental aspiration of new-generation high-performing buildings is to reduce energy use while securing indoor environmental quality conducive to human health and productivity. However, existing frameworks for identifying Key Performance Indicators ( ...

The SALUTE project aims at evaluating performance of electroacoustic metasurface, employing a surface array of controlled electroacoustic actuators, for smart acoustic lining under grazing turbulent flow to be used in UHBR Technologies Engines. Theoretical ...

Modern health and productivity concerns related to air pollutant exposure in buildings have sparked the need for occupant-centric monitoring and ventilation control. The existing personal exposure monitoring is often restricted to stationary air quality se ...

The presence of a ventilated air gap behind the external cladding in a building envelope is known to have a tangible contribution to the overall performance of the wall assembly. In the present study, the hydrodynamic and thermal performances of ventilated ...

Residential ventilative cooling via natural ventilation is influenced by outdoor air pollution. However, relative to climate, outdoor air pollution is not comprehensively considered in determining the ventilative cooling potential of buildings. To assess t ...

Controlling audible sound requires inherently broadband and subwavelength acoustic solutions, which are to date, crucially missing. This includes current noise absorption methods, such as porous materials or acoustic resonators, which are typically ineffic ...

This simulation-based study aimed to contribute to gaining knowledge on how much the deviation between occupant-related input by the national standard and by insitu measurements might impact predictions of heating/cooling needs in offices. Analysis was per ...

Carbon dioxide generated by the human body and exhaled (VCO2) is commonly used for ventilation controls, while the metabolic rate (i.e., energy expenditure EE) is an important parameter defining human thermal comfort in buildings. These two parameters are ...

This paper presents an acoustic impedance control architecture for an electroacoustic absorber combining both feedforward and feedback microphone-based strategies on a current-driven loudspeaker. Feedforward systems enable good performance for direct imped ...

Sound absorption at low frequencies still remains a challenge in both scientific research and engineering practice. Natural porous materials are ineffective in this frequency range, as well as acoustic resonators which present too narrow bandwidth of absor ...

In the majority of active sound absorbing systems, a conventional electrodynamic loudspeaker is used as a controlled source. However, particular situations may require an actuator that is more resistant to harsh environments, adjustable in shape, and light ...

When designed and operated adequately, natural ventilation (NV) can improve the buildings' energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality. There is a plethora of factors that limit the effectiveness of NV, such as the climate, surrounding buildings, no ...

A ventilated air-space behind external claddings can potentially affect the thermal performance of the entire building structure. In particular, in the Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) facades, ventilated cavities are typically present between the P ...

For many decades, ventilated cavities in wall assemblies of buildings have been essential for creating moisture-resilient constructions by allowing airflow within the air gap to promote drying. In addition to that, the airflow in the cavity can contribute ...

The variation of the thermo-hydrodynamic behavior of the airflow in the ventilated cavity behind external claddings in a wall structure could potentially affect the overall thermal resistance of the entire structure. Although the impact of an enclosed air- ...

Environmental noise, mostly related to human activities, has an immense impact on public health. The development of noise reduction technologies is paramount in addressing this problem. Because of practical and economic reasons, a compact, broadband, light ...
