Sociality has profound evolutionary roots and is observed from unicellular organisms to multicellular animals. In line with the view that social principles apply across levels of biological complexity, a growing body of data highlights the remarkable socia ...

Stroke is one of the leading causes of long-term disability. Advanced technological solutions ("neurotechnologies'') exploiting robotic systems and electrodes that stimulate the nervous system can increase the efficacy of stroke rehabilitation. Recent stud ...

The discovery of carbon-based nanomaterials has impacted a variety of research areas in ways that could not be imagined three decades ago. Their unique combination of structural, optical, and electronic properties has made these nano-sized materials partic ...

Volume electron microscopy is an important imaging modality in contemporary cell biology. Identification of intracellular structures is a laborious process limiting the effective use of this potentially powerful tool. We resolved this bottleneck with autom ...

Cell trackers are fluorescent chemical tools that facilitate imaging and tracking cells within live organisms. Despite their versatility, these dyes lack specificity, tend to leak outside of the cell, and stain neighboring cells. Here, we report a dual-act ...

Cultured autologous human articular chondrocyte (HAC) implantation has been extensively investigated for safe and effective promotion of structural and functional restoration of knee cartilage lesions. HAC-based cytotherapeutic products for clinical use mu ...

Changes to the structure and function of neural networks are thought to underlie the evolutionary adaptation of animal behaviours. Among the many developmental phenomena that generate change programmed cell death (PCD) appears to play a key role. We show t ...

By combining well-established population genetic theory with high-throughput sequencing data from natural populations, major strides have recently been made in understanding how, why, and when vertebrate populations evolve crypsis. Here, we focus on backgr ...

Significant increases in sedimentation rate accompany the evolution of multicellularity. These increases should lead to rapid changes in ecological distribution, thereby affecting the costs and benefits of multicellularity and its likelihood to evolve. How ...

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) is used to characterize brain tissue microstructure employing tissue-specific biophysical models. A current limitation, however, is that most of the proposed models are based on the assumption of negli ...

Precise spatiotemporal regulation of gene expression is essential for development and homeostasis of complex organisms. This is achieved in large part by sequence-specific transcription factors (TF) that bind to genomic regulatory elements to activate or r ...

All cells need to be able to sense their environment, and adapt their metabolism, growth and cell division appropriately. In this study, I examined the response of Schizosaccharomyces pombe to a change in the carbon source and how that affects cytokinesis. ...

Transposable elements (TEs) are genetic units capable of spreading within the genomes of their host. TEs contribute a readily recognizable 45% of the human DNA, reflecting in part their co-option for some as source of protein-coding sequences, for others a ...

In lymphopenic environments, secondary lymphoid organs regulate the size of B and T cell compartments by supporting the homeostatic proliferation of mature lymphocytes. The molecular mechanisms underlying these responses and their functional consequences r ...

The evolutionarily conserved nature of the few well-known anti-aging interventions that affect lifespan, such as caloric restriction, suggests that aging-related research in model organisms is directly relevant to human aging. Since human lifespan is a com ...

In humans, mice, and other mammals key internal organs such as the gut, the lungs, the pancreas, and the liver all derive from the same embryonic tissue: the endoderm. The development of all of these structures thus depends on a same set of early cells, an ...

The first International Summer School on Bone Marrow Adiposity was organized by members of Bone Marrow Adiposity Society and held virtually on September 6-8 2021. The goal of this meeting was to bring together young scientists interested in learning about ...

Krüppel‐associated box (KRAB)‐containing zinc finger proteins (KZFPs) are encoded in the hundreds by the genomes of higher vertebrates, and many act with the heterochromatin‐inducing KAP1 as repressors of transposable elements (TEs) during early embryogene ...

Protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) play a crucial role in expanding the protein diversity and are one of the major mechanisms through which cells respond to ever changing environmental cues. The function of two of the most important cellular c ...

Throughout the animal kingdom, mitochondria are the only organelles that retain their own genome and the transcription and translation machineries that are all essential for energy harvesting. Mitochondria have developed a complex communication network, al ...
