Neuromodulation of neocortical microcircuits is one of the most fascinating and mysterious aspects of brain physiology. Despite over a century of research, the neuroscientific community has yet to uncover the fundamental biological organizing principles un ...

We propose and analyse randomized cubature formulae for the numerical integration of functions with respect to a given probability measure μ defined on a domain Γ⊆ℝ^d, in any dimension d. Each cubature formula is conceived to be exact on a given finite dim ...

Cakoni and Nguyen recently proposed very general conditions on the coefficients of Maxwell equations for which they established the discreten ess of the set of eigenvalues of the transmission problem and studied their locations. In this paper, we establish ...

The valorisation of the plant biopolymer lignin is now recognised as essential to enabling the economic viability of the lignocellulosic biorefining industry. In this context, the "lignin-first" biorefining approach, in which lignin valorisation is conside ...

The present invention is related to a stretchable tubular device (1) comprising at least one layer (Lx) of a stretchable polymer, a power supply (2) and a set of electrodes (3a, 3b) connected to said power supply (2). The power supply can supply at least a ...

We are interested in a reduced order method for the efficient simulation of blood flow in arteries. The blood dynamics is modeled by means of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. Our algorithm is based on an approximated domain-decomposition of the ...

In this paper we study stationary graphs for functionals of geometric nature defined on currents or varifolds. The point of view we adopt is the one of differential inclusions, introduced in this context in the recent papers (De Lellis et al. in Geometric ...

New methods are required for sustainable and economical management of bridges. Efficient management can be achieved by a detailed understanding of bridge behavior through monitoring and model-based data interpretation. This paper presents a methodology to ...

We investigate the regularity of the free boundary for the Signorini problem in Rn+1. It is known that regular points are (n−1)-dimensional and C∞. However, even for C∞ obstacles φ, the set of non-regular (or degenerate) points could be very large—e.g. wit ...

Soft pneumatic actuators (SPAs) are highly desirable for interactive robotics applications owing to their unconventional properties like high compliance, safe human-machine interaction and adaptable design space. The SPA dynamic behaviour is governed by pn ...

This chapter addresses the alignment of educational robotics (ER) tools with classroom activities. To this end, it first introduces a conceptualization of ER activities describing the relevant cognitive artifacts and the learning theories underlying such a ...

Four Electron Cyclotron Heating Upper Launchers (ECHUL) will be used at ITER to counteract magneto-hydrodynamic plasma instabilities by targeting them with up to 20 MW of mm-wave power at 170 GHz. The millimeter waves are guided through a set of fixed mirr ...
