The acoustics of a room often refer to the quality of the room in terms of sound recording as well as sound reproduction. At low frequencies, where the wavelengths are of the same order of magnitude with the dimensions of the room, due to the standing wave ...

Inspired by the human ability to localize sounds, even with only one ear, as well as to recognize objects using active echolocation, we investigate the role of sound scattering and prior knowledge in regularizing ill-posed inverse problems in acoustics. In ...

In this paper we introduce an open source and reproducible microphone array hardware design and an anechoic dataset recorded with this array. The Pyramic array has 48 microphones spread onto six identical modules connected to an FPGA-ARM combo. The arrange ...

Remote microphone systems significantly improve speech intelligibly performance offered by hearing aids. The voice of the speaker(s) is captured close to the mouth by a microphone, then wirelessly sent to the hearing aids. However, the sound is rendered in ...

Little is known about the perception of artificial spatial hearing by hearing-impaired subjects. The purpose of this study was to investigate how listeners with hearing disorders perceived the effect of a spatialization feature designed for wireless microp ...

A method for presenting to a user of a wearable audio device a modified audio scene together with additional information related to the audio scene, comprising: capturing audio signals with a plurality of microphones; outputting an audio signal with a plur ...

We propose a sparse coding approach to address the problem of source-sensor localization and speech reconstruction. This approach relies on designing a dictionary of spatialized signals by projecting the microphone array recordings into the array manifolds ...

There is provided a hearing assistance system, comprising a transmission unit (10) comprising a microphone arrangement (17) for capturing audio signals from a voice of a speaker ( 11 ) using the transmission unit and being adapted to transmit the audio sig ...

A novel localization approach is proposed in order to find the position of an individual source using recordings of a single microphone in a reverberant enclosure. The multipath propagation is modeled by multiple virtual microphones as images of the actual ...

Microphone arrays are central players in hands-free speech interface applications. The main duty of a microphone array is capturing distant-talking speech with high quality. A microphone array can acquire the desired speech signals selectively by leading t ...

In architecture, space is traditionally understood as a cumulus of forms, colors and textures that form a conceived area, or-in other words-architectural space design is mainly achieved by following visual concepts. The human experience of space, however, ...

A central theme of this thesis is using echoes to achieve useful, interesting, and sometimes surprising results. One should have no doubts about the echoes' constructive potential; it is, after all, demonstrated masterfully by Nature. Just think about the ...

Digital wireless microphone systems have been developed to enhance speech intelligibility for hearing aid users. The voice of the speaker of interest is picked-up close to the mouth by a body-worn microphone, and rendered in a diotic way (same signal at th ...

This paper presents a methodology for the design of broadband electroacoustic resonators for low-frequency room equalization. An electroacoustic resonator denotes a loudspeaker used as a membrane resonator, the acoustic impedance of which can be modified t ...

Depth imaging is commonly based on light. For example, LIDAR and Kinect use infrared light, while stereo cameras use visible light. These systems require hardware operating at high sampling frequencies, precise calibration, and they dissipate significant p ...

A compelling method to calibrate the positions of microphones in an array is with sources at unknown locations. Remarkably, it is possible to reconstruct the locations of both the sources and the receivers, if their number is larger than some prescribed mi ...

We tackle the multi-party speech recovery problem through modeling the acoustic of the reverberant chambers. Our approach exploits structured sparsity models to perform room modeling and speech recovery. We propose a scheme for characterizing the room acou ...

Imagine that you are blindfolded inside an unknown room. You snap your fingers and listen to the room’s response. Can you hear the shape of the room? Some people can do it naturally, but can we design computer algorithms that hear rooms? We show how to com ...

At low frequencies, standing waves within the room cause large frequency-response variations in the listening environment, such as audio rooms or recording studios. This unwanted phenomenon has a significant impact on the sound quality of an audio system. ...

A sound field on a line or in a plane has an effectively limited spatial bandwidth determined by the temporal frequency. Similar can be said for sound fields from far-field sources when analyzed on circular and spherical apertures. Namely, for a given freq ...
