Carbon nano-onions are a class of nanomaterials that can exhibit long electron spin relaxation times at room temperature and thus hold promise as potential building blocks for spintronics and quantum information processing devices. Despite first being synt ...

The electronic structure of surfaces plays a key role in the properties of quantum devices. However, surfaces are also the most challenging to simulate and engineer. Here, the electronic structure of InAs(001), InAs(111), and InSb(110) surfaces is studied ...

We present a first-principles investigation of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the pristine and Fe-doped alpha-MnO2 using density-functional theory with extended Hubbard functionals. The onsite U and intersite V Hubbard parameters ar ...

Nanostructured graphitic materials, including graphene hosting Å to nanometer-sized pores, have attracted attention for various applications such as separations, sensors, and energy storage. Graphene with Å-scale pores is a promising next-generation materi ...

Graphite has been intensively studied, yet its electron spins dynamics remains an unresolved problem even 70 years after the first experiments. The central quantities, the longitudinal (T-1) and transverse (T-2) relaxation times were postulated to be equal ...

Gas separation is one of the most important industrial processes and is poised to take a larger role in the transition to renewable energy, e.g., carbon capture and hydrogen purification. Conventional gas separation processes involving cryogenic distillati ...

Heteroatom doping engineering is deemed to be an adoptable strategy to boost the potassium (K) storage performance of carbonaceous materials. The inevitable issue for this strategy lies in the huge volume expansion originated from the large radius of K+. I ...

We introduce a skin-inspired epidermal bioelectronic patch (EBP) with unprecedented integration of graphene on silk with a facile and cost-effective fabrication process, excluding complex ink formulation. We advance the state-of-the-art by directly screen- ...

From the stability of colloidal suspensions to the charging of electrodes, electric double layers play a pivotal role in aqueous systems. The interactions between interfaces, water molecules, ions and other solutes making up the electrical double layer spa ...

Defect engineering in heterostructured carbon-based electrode materials has evolved as an emerging strategy to boost the electrocatalytic activity. Herein, a facile single-step route is reported to synthesize novel N-coordinated bimetal doped graphitic car ...

We unveil the nature of the structural disorder in bottom-up zigzag graphene nanoribbons along with its effect on the magnetism and electronic transport on the basis of scanning probe microscopies and first-principles calculations. We find that edge-missin ...

The electronic density of states (DOS) quantifies the distribution of the energy levels that can be occupied by electrons in a quasiparticle picture and is central to modern electronic structure theory. It also underpins the computation and interpretation ...

The low-energy electronic structure of nanographenes can be tuned through zero-energy pi-electron states, typically referred to as zero-modes. Customizable electronic and magnetic structures have been engineered by coupling zero-modes through exchange and ...

Defects in solid-state systems can be both detrimental, deteriorating the quality of materials, or desired, thanks to the novel functionality they bring. Optically active point defects, producing fluorescent light, are a great example of the latter. Natura ...

We combine spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy with quantum master equation analysis to investigate the spin dynamics of the single atom magnet Dy on graphene/Ir(111). By performing reading and writing experiments, we show that the strongly spin p ...

Atomic design of a 2D-material such as graphene can be substantially influenced by etching, deliberately induced in a transmission electron microscope. It is achieved primarily by overcoming the threshold energy for defect formation by controlling the kine ...

Near-infrared luminescent materials have recently received considerable attention for a large number of applications, including in solid-state lighting, as bioimaging agents, as photovoltaic cells, and in the telecommunication industry. By adding diverse e ...

We conducted atomic-scale scanning tunneling microscopy of a graphene nanosheet on graphite. In addition to a rhombus lattice representing the (root 3x root 3)R30 degrees superstructure, we resolved another quadrangle lattice similar to a rectangle in the ...

Computational chemistry aims to simulate reactions and molecular properties at the atomic scale, advancing the design of novel compounds and materials with economic, environmental, and societal implications. However, the field relies on approximate quantum ...

The automation of ab initio simulations is essential in view of performing high-throughput (HT) computational screenings oriented to the discovery of novel materials with desired physical properties. In this work, we propose algorithms and implementations ...
