Cortical dynamics underlie many cognitive processes and emerge from complex multi-scale interactions, which are challenging to study in vivo. Large-scale, biophysically detailed models offer a tool which can complement laboratory approaches. We present a m ...

The function of the neocortex is fundamentally determined by its repeating microcircuit motif, but also by its rich, hierarchical, interregional structure with a highly specific laminar architecture. The last decade has seen the emergence of extensive new ...

Recent developments in experimental techniques have enabled simultaneous recordings from thousands of neurons, enabling the study of functional cell assemblies. However, determining the patterns of synaptic connectivity giving rise to these assemblies rema ...

How information in the nervous system is encoded by patterns of action potentials (i.e. spikes) remains an open question. Multi-neuron patterns of single spikes are a prime candidate for spike time encoding but their temporal variability requires further c ...

Synaptic plasticity underlies the brain’s ability to learn and adapt. While experiments in brain slices have revealed mechanisms and protocols for the induction of plasticity between pairs of neurons, how these synaptic changes are coordinated in biologica ...

Synaptic connectivity at the neuronal level is characterized by highly non-random features. Hypotheses about their role can be developed by correlating structural metrics to functional features. But to prove causation, manipulations of connectivity would h ...

The high energetic demands of the brain arise primarily from neuronal activity. Neurons consume substantial energy to transmit information as electrical signals and maintain their resting membrane potential. These energetic requirements are met by the neur ...
