Memory corruption errors in C/C++ programs remain the most common source of security vulnerabilities in today's systems. Over the last 10+ years the security community developed several defenses [4] Data Execution Prevention (DEP) protects against code inj ...

Side-channel disassembly attacks recover CPU instructions from power or electromagnetic side-channel traces measured during code execution. These attacks typically rely on physical access, proximity to the victim device, and high sampling rate measuring in ...

Dynamic loading is a core feature used on current systems to (i) enable modularity and reuse, (ii) reduce memory footprint by sharing code pages of libraries and executables among processes, and (iii) simplify update procedures by eliminating the need to r ...

Fuzz testing a software library requires developers to write fuzz drivers, specialized programs exercising the library. Given a driver, fuzzers generate interesting inputs that trigger the library’s bugs. Writing fuzz drivers manually is a cumbersome proce ...

Compilers assure that any produced optimized code is semantically equivalent to the original code. However, even "correct" compilers may introduce security bugs as security properties go beyond translation correctness. Security bugs introduced by such corr ...

This repository contains the design files and software required to reproduce the results in the paper "Instruction-Level Power Side-Channel Leakage Evaluation of Soft-Core CPUs on Shared FPGAs" by Ognjen Glamocanin, Shashwat Shrivastava, Jinwei Yao, Nour A ...

Increasing internet connectivity poses an existential threat for cyber-physical systems. Securing these safety-critical systems becomes an important challenge. Cyber-physical systems often comprise several control applications that are implemented on share ...

Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) embedded in IoT devices provide a deployable solution to secure IoT applications at the hardware level. By design, in TEEs, the Trusted Operating System (Trusted OS) is the primary component. It enables the TEE to use ...

GPU-accelerated graphics is commonly used in mobile applications. Unfortunately, the graphics interface exposes a large amount of potentially vulnerable kernel code (i.e., the GPU device driver) to untrusted applications. This broad attack surface has resu ...

Modern software needs fine-grained compartmentalization, i.e., intra-process isolation. A particularly important reason for it are supply-chain attacks, the need for which is aggravated by modern applications depending on hundreds or even thousands of libr ...

Static rewriting enables late-state code changes (e.g., to add mitigations, to remove unnecessary code, or to instrument for code coverage) at low overhead in security-critical environments. Most research on static rewriting has so far focused on the x86 a ...

Programming languages and systems have failed to address the security implications of the increasingly frequent use of public libraries to construct modern software. Most languages provide tools and online repositories to publish, import, and use libraries ...

Computer systems designers are building cache hierarchies with higher capacity to capture the ever-increasing working sets of modern workloads. Cache hierarchies with higher capacity improve system performance but shift the performance bottleneck to addres ...

Modern software (both programs and libraries) provides large amounts of functionality, vastly exceeding what is needed for a single given task. This additional functionality results in an increased attack surface: first, an attacker can use bugs in the unn ...

Spectre, Meltdown, and related attacks have demonstrated that kernels, hypervisors, trusted execution environments, and browsers are prone to information disclosure through micro-architectural weaknesses. However, it remains unclear as to what extent other ...

Given the increasing ubiquity of online embedded devices, analyzing their firmware is important to security, privacy, and safety. The tight coupling between hardware and firmware and the diversity found in embedded systems makes it hard to perform dynamic ...

Double-fetch bugs are a plague across all major operating system kernels. They occur when data is fetched twice across the user/kernel trust boundary while allowing concurrent modification. Such bugs enable an attacker to illegally access memory, cause den ...

Virtual function calls are one of the most popular control-flow hijack attack targets. Compilers use a virtual function pointer table, called a VTable, to dynamically dispatch virtual function calls. These VTables are read-only, but pointers to them are no ...

Simulating all threads in a scaled GPU workload results in prohibitive simulation cost. Cycle-level simulation is orders of magnitude slower than native silicon, the only solution is to reduce the amount of work simulated while accurately representing the ...

Knowledge of a program's input format is essential for effective input generation in fuzzing. Automated input format reverse engineering represents an attractive but challenging approach to learning the format. In this paper, we address several challenges ...
