European Journal of Neuroscience published by Federation of European Neuroscience Societies and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Within the reductionist framework, researchers in the special sciences formulate key terms and concepts and try to explain them with lower ...

How does the visual system represent continuity in the constantly changing visual input? A recent proposal is that vision is serially dependent: Stimuli seen a moment ago influence what we perceive in the present. In line with this, recent frameworks sugge ...

In crowding, the perception of a target is impeded by surrounding clutter. While traditional models are feedforward and local, there is increasing behavioral and neural evidence for a critical role of recurrent processing across the visual hierarchy in cro ...

The awake mammalian brain is functionally organized in terms of large-scale distributed networks that are constantly interacting. Loss of consciousness might disrupt this temporal organization leaving patients unresponsive. We hypothesize that characterizi ...

Traditional models posit that visual processing is local and feedforward. In this vein, crowding is explained to be the result of pooling of target and flanker features in early visual areas. Specifically, it has been suggested that when the target and fla ...

Perceptual decisions are biased towards previous stimuli, a phenomenon known as serial dependence. However, the mechanisms of this bias are unknown. For example, it is debated whether serial dependence reflects a perceptual bias or interference of prior st ...
