The global transition to decentralized energy systems signifies a fundamental transformation toward sustainable energy paradigms. This study specifically focuses on the Swiss energy system, analyzing how dynamic pricing influences the strategic decisions o ...

Fuels from bio-based resources hold the potential to supply fossil fuel alternatives at reasonable economic and environmental expenses that can assist emission reduction in the transportation sector. However, apart from a general need to reduce fossil-base ...

Biorefineries hold the potential to provide products and energy carriers at reduced environmental impact compared to their fossil-based counterparts. Thus, they can contribute to the decarbonization of sectors in which electrification of demands is challen ...

A shift from fossil-based energy and products to more sustainable alternatives is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and associated climate change impacts. Biomass represents a promising alternative for providing fuels and carbon-based products w ...

In this contribution, we propose an algorithm for replacing non-linear process simulation integrated in multi-level optimization of an energy system superstructure with surrogate models. With our approach, we demonstrate that surrogate models are a valid t ...

Biomass resources can play an important role in the energy transition, being a dynamic feedstock that can be transformed either into solid, liquid or gaseous fuels. The biomass gasification is a versatile way to convert wastes into energy. In this work, th ...

Greenhouse gas emission mitigation is one of the main motivations for increasing the use of biomass in providing environmentally friendly value-added products. The pulp and paper industry is a promising sector for the integration of biorefinery pathways. A ...

The task of optimally designing and scheduling energy systems with a high share of renewable energies is complex and computationally demanding. A widespread method for tackling this task is to apply mixed integer linear programming (MILP). Even though the ...

The management of plastic waste is a growing concern that can harm wildlife and ecosystems, and its end-of-life policies are key to mitigating plastic environmental impact. This work presents a decision-making methodology for the thermal and material valor ...

Simulation-based optimization models are widely applied to find optimal operating conditions of processes. Often, computational challenges arise from model complexity, making the generation of reliable design solutions difficult. We propose an algorithm fo ...

The AIDRES database aims to support the long-term objective of a fully integrated industrial strategy in the EU 27, providing a service to the European Commission and a catalogue for industries to understand the effectiveness, efficiency and cost of potent ...

Surplus electricity production is anticipated to further increase during summer periods due to the inevitable high penetration of renewable energy sources in our energy system. Potential solutions for sustainable and efficient energy storage need to be exp ...

In Process Systems Engineering, computationally-demanding models are frequent and plentiful. Handling such complexity in an optimization framework in a fast and reliable way is essential, not only for generating meaningful solutions but also for providing ...

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is commonly acknowledged as a valuable technology for reducing industrial emissions. However, limited installation capacity raises questions about its ability to scale up effectively and promptly. This issue can, in part, b ...

To limit climate change by reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, a transition away from fossil fuels is required. Biofuels represent a promising low carbon alternative for sectors that are hard to electrify, such as aviation. The integration of bio ref ...

In superstructure optimization of processes and energy systems, the design space is defined as the combination of unit considerations, process conditions and model parameters that might be subjected to uncertainty. Most of the time, decision makers are not ...

Wastewater treatment and sludge disposal are responsible for considerable costs and emissions in a global scale. With population and urbanization growing, tackling the rational and efficient use of energy while fulfilling the desired effluent standards are ...

Environmentally sustainable and economically viable process and energy systems are imperative to a successful energy transition. Often, design configurations are derived from a global perspective, in which the individual needs and interests of actors withi ...

Biomass, bioenergy and negative emission technologies are inherent to the future design of energy systems. Urban clusters have a growing demand for fuel, heat and electricity, which is both a challenge and an opportunity for biomass-based technologies. The ...

A techno-economic assessment and environmental and social sustainability assessments of novel Fischer-Tropsch (FT) biodiesel production from the wet and dry gasification of biomass-based residue streams (bark and black liquor from pulp production) for tran ...
