City centres of Europe are often composed of unreinforced masonry structural aggregates, whose seismic response is challenging to predict. To advance the state of the art on the seismic response of these aggregates, the Adjacent Interacting Masonry Structu ...

The construction sector is the largest consumer of non-renewable resources and the most significant contributor to CO2 emissions. Reusing entire components or reclaiming their constituent parts, instead of recycling structural elements at the material leve ...

Masonry aggregates, which emerged as layouts of cities and villages became denser, make up historical centres all over the world. In these aggregates, neighbouring structures may share structural walls that are joined at the interfaces by mortar or interlo ...

This paper presents a probabilistic seismic demand model (PSDM) as a relationship between intensity measures (IMs) and engineering demand parameters (EDPs) for the seismic assessment of two case studies resembling historical masonry buildings. The first on ...

Seismic assessments of historical masonry buildings are affected by several sources of epistemic uncertainty. These are mainly the material and the modelling parameters and the displacement capacity of the elements. Additional sources of uncertainty lie in ...

The sympathetic restoration and conservation of built cultural heritage play a significant role in the management and preparedness for future climate scenarios by facilitating adaptive reuse, enhancing cultural resilience, preserving traditional knowledge, ...

Modeling the seismic response of historical masonry buildings is challenging due to many aleatory and epistemic uncertainties. Additionally, the interaction between structural units further complicates predictions of the seismic behavior of unreinforced ma ...

Though flexible diaphragms play a role in the seismic behaviour of unreinforced masonry buildings, the effect of the connections between floors and walls is rarely discussed or explicitly modelled when simulating the response of such buildings. These flexi ...

Unreinforced masonry buildings with flexible timber floors are amongst the most vulnerable building typologies for seismic loading. Though flexible diaphragms play a role in the seismic behaviour of unreinforced masonry buildings, the impact of the connect ...

The seismic analysis of existing unreinforced masonry buildings is a challenging task, troubled by different sources of material and modelling uncertainties. The historical heritage value of a building can further complicate the assessment and design of re ...

Masonry aggregates have developed throughout city centres of Europe due to a centuries-long densification process that generally lacked consistent planning or engineering. Adjacent units are connected either through interlocking stones or a layer of mortar ...

The SERA project AIMS (Seismic Testing of Adjacent Interacting Masonry Structures) comprised a blind prediction competition related to a shake-table test of an aggregate of two buildings under two horizontal components of dynamic excitation. Each group was ...

Historical centers of Europe and Croatia are often formed by unreinforced masonry building aggregates that developed as the layout of the city or village was densified. In these aggregates, adjacent buildings can share structural walls with an older and a ...

This paper investigates the applicability and limitations of the guidelines for ground motion selection and scaling provided in the first- and second-generation of Eurocode 8 for the assessment of two unreinforced masonry buildings subjected to bi-directio ...

In many historical centres in Europe, stone masonry buildings are part of building aggregates, which developed when the layout of the city or village was densified. In these aggregates, adjacent buildings share structural walls to support floors and roofs. ...

In many historical centers in Europe, stone masonry is part of building aggregates, which developed when the layout of the city or village was densified. The analysis of such building aggregates is very challenging and modelling guidelines missing. Advance ...

Masonry buildings form building aggregates around the world in historical centers, which developed as the layout of the city or village densified. In these aggregates, adjacent buildings can share structural walls, connected at the interfaces by interlocki ...

Masonry building aggregates can be found throughout historical city centers of Europe. Adjacent buildings have often developed during the long densification process, without consistent planning or engineering. It is common for neighboring units to share a ...

This paper explores the seismic fragility assessment of historical masonry buildings in the context of performance-based earthquake engineering, using multiple-record incremental dynamic analyses (MR-IDA). The methodology is applied to two case studies, th ...
