A theoretical framework describing the hydrodynamic interactions between a passive particle and an active medium in out-of-equilibrium systems predicts long-range Levy flights for the diffusing particle driven by the density of the active component. Browni ...

Networks of flexible filaments often involve regions of tight contact. Predictively understanding the equilibrium configurations of these systems is challenging due to intricate couplings between topology, geometry, large nonlinear deformations, and fricti ...

Discrete domes are doubly curved structures comprising a network of beam-like elements. We study the mechanics of discrete domes made of ribbons woven in a pentagonal triaxial pattern. Experiments and finite element simulations are performed to characteriz ...

We present a methodology to simulate the mechanics of knots in elastic rods using geometrically nonlinear, full three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis. We focus on the mechanical behavior of knots in tight configurations, for which the full 3D defo ...

Snapping of a slender structure is utilized in a wide range of natural and manmade systems, mostly to achieve rapid movement without relying on musclelike elements. Although several mechanisms for elastic energy storage and rapid release have been studied ...

We perform a compare-and-contrast investigation between the equilibrium shapes of physical and ideal trefoil knots, both in closed and open configurations. Ideal knots are purely geometric abstractions for the tightest configuration tied in a perfectly fle ...

We consider the following nonlinear fractional Choquard equation epsilon(2s) (-Delta)(A/epsilon)(s) u + V(x)u = epsilon(mu-N) (1/vertical bar x vertical bar(mu) * F vertical bar mu vertical bar(2))) f(vertical bar u vertical bar(2))u in R-N, where epsilon ...
