The Arctic is experiencing heightened precipitation, affected by aerosols impacting rainfall and snowfall. However, sparse aerosol observations in the central Arctic cryosphere contribute to uncertainties in simulating aerosol-precipitation two-way interac ...

Detailed knowledge of the physical and chemical properties and sources of particles that form clouds is especially important in pristine areas like the Arctic, where particle concentrations are often low and observations are sparse. Here, we present in sit ...

This dataset contains corrected particle number concentration data measured during the year long MOSAiC expedition from October 2019 to September 2020. The measurement was performed in the Swiss aerosol container on the D-deck of Research Vessel Polarstern ...

These measurements were made as part of the Alaskan Layered Pollution And Chemical Analysis (ALPACA)-2022 field study (https://alpaca.community.uaf.edu/alpaca-field-study/), which investigated air pollution under dark and cold conditions in Fairbanks, Alas ...

Observations are reported of HClO3 and HClO4 in the atmosphere and their widespread occurrence over the pan-Arctic during spring, providing further insights into atmospheric chlorine cycling in the polar environment. ...

The Arctic is sensitive to cloud radiative forcing. Due to the limited number of aerosols present throughout much of the year, cloud formation is susceptible to the presence of cloud condensation nuclei and ice nucleating particles (INPs). Primary biologic ...

Understanding aerosol–cloud–climate interactions in the Arctic is key to predicting the climate in this rapidly changing region. Whilst many studies have focused on submicrometer aerosol (diameter less than 1 µm), relatively little is known about the super ...

The Arctic environment is transforming rapidly due to climate change. Aerosols’ abundance and physicochemical characteristics play a crucial, yet uncertain, role in these changes due to their influence on the surface energy budget through direct interactio ...

The amount of ice versus supercooled water in clouds is important for their radiative properties and role in climate feedbacks. Hence, knowledge of the concentration of ice-nucleating particles (INPs) is needed. Generally, the concentrations of INPs are fo ...

Atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations in the Arctic exhibit a clear summertime maximum, while the origin of this peak is still a matter of debate in the community. Based on summertime observations during the Multidisciplinary drifting ...

The ultrafine particle (UFP) concentration is the concentration of particles having a diameter between 2.5 and 15 nm, it is reported in terms of particle number per cubic centimeter at a time resolution of 10 minutes. UFP are the smallest particles within ...

Aerosols play a critical role in the Arctic's radiative balance, influencing solar radiation and cloud formation. Limited observations in the central Arctic leave gaps in understanding aerosol dynamics year-round, affecting model predictions of climate-rel ...

In this study, we present and analyze the first continuous time series of relevant aerosol precursor vapors from the central Arctic (north of 80°N) during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition. These ...

Studying primary biological aerosol particles in the Arctic is crucial to understanding their role in cloud formation and climate regulation at high latitudes. During the Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition, fluorescent primary biological aerosol particles (fPBAP ...

Polar oceans and sea ice cover 15% of the Earth’s ocean surface, and the environment is changing rapidly at both poles. Improving knowledge on the interactions between the atmospheric and oceanic realms in the polar regions, a Surface Ocean–Lower Atmospher ...

Even though the Arctic is remote, aerosol properties observed there are strongly influenced by anthropogenic emissions from outside the Arctic. This is particularly true for the so-called Arctic haze season (January through April). In summer (June through ...

Atmospheric pollution threatens human health worldwide, with tropospheric ozone (O 3) and particulate matter (PM) among the most harmful pollutants. Urban trees can reduce the concentration of air pollutants through dry deposition on their canopies and sto ...

This dataset contains the temperature and relative humidity in a bypass to the total inlet, measured during the MOSAiC expedition from October 2019 to September 2020. The measurements were performed in the bypass interstitial inlet of the Swiss container o ...

Dataset abstract The ship's cruise track, velocity, course over ground and heading at one-minute resolution for all five legs of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) are derived from a combination of: - the latitude/longitud ...

The role of polar regions is increasing in terms of megatrends such as globalization, new transport routes, demography, and the use of natural resources with consequent effects on regional and transported pollutant concentrations. We set up the ERA-PLANET ...
