The fundamental aspiration of new-generation high-performing buildings is to reduce energy use while securing indoor environmental quality conducive to human health and productivity. However, existing frameworks for identifying Key Performance Indicators ( ...

Thermal comfort and discomfort based on the local sensation of different body parts have been an important development in thermal comfort studies from the past decade. The human thermophysiology model can be a handy tool to predict local skin and core temp ...

The presence of a ventilated air gap behind the external cladding in a building envelope is known to have a tangible contribution to the overall performance of the wall assembly. In the present study, the hydrodynamic and thermal performances of ventilated ...

Objective The study was undertaken to show the magnitude of interindividual differences in energy expenditure (i.e., heat production) under normal living conditions with the aim of providing physiological evidence to support the advancement of a personaliz ...

Recent simulation-based studies have indicated that Economic Model Predictive Control (EMPC) of space heating systems can exploit the thermal mass in residential buildings for demand response (DR) purposes in district heating systems. However, there is a l ...

Cities are facing unprecedented challenges to their environments and residents due to continuous growth, including urban overheating, daylight accessibility, noise, and air pollution. This requires a holistic approach to the research and implementation of ...

Modern occupants hardly use their capacity to adapt to the wide range of thermal environments due to living in well-insulated buildings with indoor climatization. However, climate change with associated health hazards necessitates exploring the limits of h ...

With growing concerns on global warming, exergy-based design methods for energy hubs (EHs) in the urban context have been recently investigated to promote more rational and efficient use of energy sources. This study aims to compare exergy-based multi-obje ...

Research investigating thermoregulatory energy costs in free-living humans is limited. We determined the total energy expenditure (TEE) of Tuvan pastoralists living in an extreme cold environment and explored the contribution of physical activity and cold- ...

Well-designed ventilated air-spaces behind external claddings in the building envelope can potentially reduce thermal energy flow in the entire wall structure. In this study, the impact of the dynamic thermo-hydraulic behavior of the flow in the naturally ...

A major challenge in the common approach of hot water generation in residential houses lies in the highly stochastic nature of domestic hot water (DHW) demand. Learning hot water use behavior enables water heating systems to continuously adapt to the stoch ...

Personalized Environmental Control Systems (PECS) can improve both comfort and energy efficiency by shifting indoor climate control toward localized, occupant-tailored comfort, unlike conventional systems that condition entire, partly unoccupied spaces uni ...

Office employees are exposed to a variety of environmental and contextual stimuli that might drive them to perform control actions, such as operating windows or window blinds. These actions have a significant impact on building energy use and increase unce ...

Current thermal comfort models used in practice do not consider physiological and psychological differences of people. With this respect, human thermo-physiology models (HTPM) are useful tools to assess human thermal comfort at local and overall levels of ...

When it comes to residential buildings, there are several stochastic parameters, such as renewable energy production, outdoor air conditions, and occupants’ behavior, that are hard to model and predict accurately, with some being unique in each specific bu ...

How individuals perceive and evaluate their thermal environment is a key driver of thermoregulatory behaviour, which not only helps maintain personal comfort but also directly impacts building energy consumption - a sector responsible for approximately 30 ...

The presence of a ventilated air cavity between the external cladding and the wall core of a wall assembly can have a varying contribution to the thermal performance of the building envelope. In particular, the thermal resistance of a ventilated air-space ...

With improved insulation of building envelopes and the use of low-temperature space heating systems, the share of energy use for domestic hot water (DHW) production in buildings has increased significantly, and nearly become the most energy-expensive servi ...

Currently, the indoor thermal environment in many buildings is controlled by conventional control techniques that maintain the indoor temperature within a prescribed deadband. The latest research provides evidence that more dynamic variations of the indoor ...

Quality of the indoor environment has become an important parameter to account for in new and existing buildings due to the increasing number of people spending most of their time indoors. Generally, the design and evaluation of indoor environments in buil ...
