Background: The associations among cortisol levels, body water status, and acute mountain sickness (AMS) remain unclear. We investigated associations between AMS prevalence and severity with resting saliva cortisol levels at low altitude (LA) and high alti ...

Increasing evidence suggests that crosstalk between α-synuclein pathology formation and mitochondrial dysfunction plays a central role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease and related synucleinopathies. While mitochondrial dysfunction is a well-studi ...

It was the Summer Olympic Games 1968 held in Mexico City (2,300 m) that required scientists and coaches to cope with the expected decline of performance in endurance athletes and to establish optimal preparation programs for competing at altitude. From tha ...

The abnormal aggregation and accumulation of alpha-synuclein (aSyn) in the brain is a defining hallmark of synucleinopathies. Various aSyn conformations and post-translationally modified forms accumulate in pathological inclusions and vary in abundance amo ...

Annually, millions of people engage in mountain sports activities all over the world. These activities are associated with health benefits, but concurrently with a risk for injury and death. Knowledge on death rates is considered important for the categori ...

Millions of people engage in mountain sports activities worldwide. Although leisure-time physical activity is associated with significant health benefits, mountain sports activities also bear an inherent risk for injury and death. However, death risk may v ...

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by the accumulation of misfolded and aggregated α-synuclein (α-syn) into intraneuronal inclusions named Lewy bodies (LBs). Although it is widely believed that α-syn plays a central role in the pathogenesis of PD, t ...

Burtscher, Martin, Michael Philadelphy, Hannes Gatterer, Johannes Burtscher, Martin Faulhaber, Werner Nachbauer, and Rudolf Likar. Physiological responses in humans acutely exposed to high altitude (3480 m): Minute ventilation and oxygenation are predictiv ...

In 2013, mortality reductions with improving cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) have been suggested to persist until 13 METs. More recently, accumulating evidence from large-scale studies suggests that mortality from all causes decreases with increasing CRF l ...

Background: Testing the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) at low-altitude helps to detect those who do not hyperventilate appropriately in hypoxia but might not necessarily predict the HVR and the risk to develop acute mountain sickness (AMS) at high alti ...

Annually, thousands of air travellers visit high altitude destinations to enjoy hiking tours to attractions in surrounding areas. However, many of them are not adequately trained, not sufficiently acclimatized and/or may suffer from pre-existing diseases. ...

Alpha-synuclein aggregation and mitochondrial dysfunction are main pathological hallmarks of Parkinson's disease (PD) and several other neurodegenerative diseases, collectively known as synucleinopathies. However, increasing evidence suggests that they may ...

Despite the strong evidence linking the aggregation of the Huntingtin protein (Htt) to the pathogenesis of Huntington’s disease (HD), the mechanisms underlying Htt aggregation and neurodegeneration remain poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the ultr ...

Several lines of research point to a key role of low oxygen supply (hypoxia) in Parkinson's disease pathogenesis. Although severe hypoxia is detrimental for the brain, physiological adaptations to mild hypoxia are neuroprotective. Herein we discuss, how ne ...

In this article, the wrong slot blots of LASH-BL34-45 and BL 4B12 were presented in Figure 2a; the figure should have appeared as shown below. The original article has been corrected. ...
