The privileged position of the Phasor Data Concentrator (PDC) in a synchrophasor-based monitoring system can be exploited to make this device the core of a distributed measurement architecture suitable for control and protection applications in power syste ...

Modern power systems are at risk of largely reducing the inertia of generation assets and prone to experience extreme dynamics. The consequence is that, during electromechanical transients triggered by large contingencies, transmission of electrical power ...

With the expanding role of converter-interfaced distributed energy resources, modern power grids are evolving towards low-inertia networks that are increasingly vulnerable to extreme dynamics. Consequently, advanced signal processing techniques are needed ...

mHealth technology, by using habitual devices, i.e., smartphones, improves prevention, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and management of health. Monitoring heart profile during intense sports activities allows to diagnose pathologies, not identifiable wi ...

Cardiotocography is a measurement technique widely adopted to assess fetal well-being during both antepartum and intra-partum stages. It consists of two simultaneously acquired time-series: fetal heart rate and uterine activity. Since visual inspection ana ...

In modern power systems, Rate of Change of Frequency (ROCOF) is employed in monitoring and control applications. However, a standard approach towards ROCOF measurements is still missing. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of Phasor Measurement U ...

The evaluation of the signal frequency and Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF) from voltage or current waveforms is used for critical grid control, monitoring and protection applications. However, when step changes in the amplitude or phase of the signal o ...

In modern power systems, the Rate-of-Change-of-Frequency (ROCOF) may be largely employed in Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) applications. However, a standard approach towards ROCOF measurements is still missing. In this paper, we inve ...

Portable monitoring devices have provided an important cost-effective solution in the development of eHealth applications, providing opportunities for population-wide promotion of physical activity. Monitoring heart profile parameters during extensive acti ...

The paper describes a centralized Under Frequency Load Shedding (UFLS) method, where load shedding decisions are based on the solution of an optimization problem. The proposed approach anticipates the evolution of the grid frequency trajectory by means of ...

While it has always been true that measurements are made to guide decision-making, there is abundant evidence that not all measurement results are meaningful. We give examples of fully-functional, tested and trusted measurement systems producing nonsensica ...

The paper describes a local under-frequency load shedding and load restoration scheme, that exploits frequency and Rate-of-Change-of-Frequency (ROCOF) measurements produced by Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) as detectors of a large contingency. The paper f ...

The eective deployment of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in Distribution Networks (DNs) requires an enhancement in terms of estimation accuracy beyond the limits of IEEE Std C37.118.1 (IEEE Std), aiming at a Total Vector Error (TVE) in the order of 0.0x% ...

As power grids transition towards low-inertia net-works based on converter-interfaced renewable energy resources, they become increasingly vulnerable to extreme dynamics. Currently, the most advanced methods for signal processing in power systems are embed ...

Synchrophasor estimation is typically performed by means of spectral analysis based on the discrete Fourier transform (DFT). Traditional DFT approaches, though, suffer from several uncertainty contributions due to the stationarity assumption, spectral leak ...

The calibration of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) consists of comparing Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) time-stamped phasors (synchrophasors) estimated by the PMU under test, against reference synchrophasors generated through a PMU calibrator. The IEEE S ...

The development of software models of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) within Real-Time Simulators (RTSs) represents a promising tool for the design and validation of monitoring and control applications in electrical power networks. In this sense, it is nec ...

The paper discusses the influence of the time synchronization technique on the synchrophasor estimation accuracy in modern Phasor Measurement Units (PMU). Specifically, we make reference to Global Positioning System (GPS), Precision Time Protocol (PTP) and ...

This paper investigates the impact of synchrophasor estimation algorithms in Under-Frequency Load-Shedding (UFLS) and Load-Restoration (LR) schemes, relying on frequency and Rate-of-Change-of-Frequency (ROCOF) measurements produced by Phasor Measurement Un ...

In modern power systems, frequency measurements are employed in many monitoring and control applications. In this context, Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) may represent a promising solution in view of a distributed and synchronized measurement infrastructu ...
