The caisson is a wooden construction system that covers opera stages for rain protection and sound control. Caissons in China display a diverse range of geometric expressions, delicate manufacturing, structural behaviours, and acoustic qualities. Despite t ...

This work proposes a new direction in structural design: the synthesis of structures through the reuse of elements. Reusing structural elements reduces the environmental impacts of building structures because it avoids sourcing new material, it reduces was ...

The zaojing is a wooden construction system that covers opera stages for rain protection and sound control. Zaojings in China display a diverse range of geometric expressions, delicate manufacturing, structural behaviours, and acoustic qualities. Despite t ...

The zaojing is an ancient Chinese construction system consisting of a dome-shaped assembly of interlocked wooden pieces. These structures are placed above live performance spaces to enhance sound diffusion while creating background scenery. Existing zaojin ...

As the most widely used construction material worldwide, concrete is the main cause of greenhouse gas emissions, material depletion, and waste generation by the construction industry. Typically, concrete waste is crushed and, at best, reclaimed into recycl ...

The construction industry’s contribution to the deterioration of Earth’s ecosystem is huge. 11% of all anthropic greenhouse gas emissions worldwide are due to the construction, demolition, and transformation of buildings and infrastructure. Construction an ...

This paper presents a generative approach for the conceptual design of structures, which aims at exploring alternative bar networks in static equilibrium by means of a grammar rule. Operating on incomplete networks of bars in interim static equilibrium, th ...

This paper presents optimization methods to design frame structures from a stock of existing elements. These methods are relevant when reusing structural elements over multiple service lives. Reuse has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of bu ...

Driven by the sustainability of the construction industry, concrete rubble is increasingly considered as a construction material rather than a waste. Analysing structures from such material through the conceptual tool of tectonics highlights a fertile grou ...

Exploring a wide range of design options is crucial for every sound conceptual design process. In the conventional structural design workflow, optimization techniques are generally employed to generate well-performing design options. However, focusing only ...

The production of concrete, the most widely used construction material, detrimentally affects the environment. Obsolete reinforced concrete (RC) load-bearing structures, even when still in good condition, are today prematurely crushed and landfilled or rec ...

The design of doubly-curved systems called for innovative modelling techniques to evaluate the final geometry of the structure. They can simulate the behaviour of beams under large displacements. Even though it is never analysed, the deformation path is ca ...

Structural designers’ efforts to reduce environmental impacts traditionally consist of developing systems that minimise material quantities or use low-impact materials. A third strategy is currently (re)emerging: the reuse of structural components over mul ...

Direct methods that transform the geometry of a structure and conserve its static equilibrium are of particular interest for designers. They allow the exploration of alternative solutions at minimum computational cost. While parallel transformations (stret ...

Building demolitions are often triggered by reasons independent of their structural conditions, causing the disposal of large quantities of reinforced concrete in good condition. Today, this concrete is, at best, crushed into aggregates, causing the loss o ...

Reused concrete rubble is a challenging material to design and construct with despite its potential for diverging waste from landfilling and energyintensive recycling. We propose a design to construction framework that leverages a camera and computationall ...

Shanghai, in the early twentieth century, was a big construction site and attractive experimental field for Western designers. Because of its significant location and international role, the construction activities contributed to some landmarks of the worl ...

Current studies and performance labels focus mainly on the operational energy demand of buildings due to heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, and hot water, but they rarely account for embodied impacts. Performing a life cycle assessment (LCA) on an en ...

The construction industry is a significant contributor to resource consumption and waste generation. To address this issue, component reuse has been proposed as a way to prevent valuable building elements from being discarded and avoid producing new ones. ...

Geodesic gridshells are shell structures made of continuous elements following geodesic lines. Their properties ease the use of beams with anisotropic cross-sections by avoiding bending about their strong axis. However, such bending may arise when flatteni ...
