Timber construction plays an important role in architectural history, in modern construction methods and in sustainable design, for which wood-only joinery techniques have been used for centuries. Traditional joinery typologies are the product of successiv ...

Mainstream approaches to design spatial architectural forms that are structurally relevant consist either in adapting well-known and catalogued conventional types or in searching for close-to-optimum solutions of well-defined problems. Few means exist to e ...

The building sector is responsible for 30% of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (UNEP, 2009). Recent energy efficiency measures have helped reduce the operational carbon related to the use phase of the building, but a lack of industry attention ...

Amid escalating concerns over CO2 emissions, resource depletion, and waste generation in construction, reusing building elements from obsolete structures presents a sustainable solution. This paper critically reviews 21 procedures used in Europe and the Un ...

The building sector is one of the major contributors to material resource consumption, greenhouse gas emission and waste production. Load-bearing systems have a particularly large environmental impact because of their material and energy intensive manufact ...

The design of envelopes with complex geometries often leads to construction challenges. To overcome these difficulties, resorting to discrete differential geometry proved successful by establishing close links between mesh properties and the existence of g ...

Today, concrete is the most widely used construction material worldwide. Strong, versatile, durable, and vector of economic development, this exceptional material is also the principal cause of greenhouse-gas emissions, material depletion and waste generat ...

The research presented in this paper highlights current practices for the end-of-life of concrete and explores opportunities in using unaltered concrete rubbles from demolition for the digital construction of structural walls. Through research by iterative ...

An important share of building environmental impacts is embodied in load-bearing structures because of their large material mass and energy-intensive fabrication process. To reduce substantially material consumption and waste caused by the construction ind ...

As floors typically account for the largest share of a building embodied carbon footprint, new strategies to build low-carbon floors must be developed and implemented. Among these strategies, the reuse of existing components is a promising circular approac ...

Design exploration frames the process of understanding design as a challenge and helps taming its complexity. It is a creative, but also paramount, process, that flourishes diversity, emergence and variability. The approaches used during this exploration s ...

Discrete sizing and topology optimization of truss structures subject to stress and displacement constraints has been formulated as a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem. The computation time to solve a MILP problem to global optimality via a b ...

With increasing environmental problems such as resource scarcity, high CO₂ emissions, growing construction waste and biodiversity loss, the design strategy with reused components offers a much-needed sustainable solution. However, a radical shift in the co ...

This paper discusses the design of load-bearing systems for buildings with regard to their current lack of open-ended reusability. The reason for dismantling load-bearing systems today tends to be less related to material degradation than to a loss of func ...

This study aims to enhance the Environmental Performance (EP) of structural elements focusing on isostatic beams to mitigate the construction sector’s impact. The objective of the study is to determine the optimum typology and geometry to maximize EP for a ...

This paper presents structural optimization techniques to design truss structures that make best use of a given stock of structural components. Still little explored, the reuse of structural components over multiple service lives has the potential to signi ...

About 9% of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions worldwide are due to the production of cement, key constituent of concrete. Concrete also contributes to a large share of demolition waste, usually coming from building structures that are discarded becaus ...

This paper presents a geometry-driven approach to form-finding with reused stock elements. Our proposed workflow uses a K-mean algorithm to cluster stock elements and incorporate their geometrical values early in the form-finding process. A feedback loop i ...

This paper explores the geometric optimization of a planar reciprocal frame (RF) floor framing structure, focusing on the triangular topology. The structural performance of the frames is computed and plotted against the geometric parameters for various loa ...

The study explores an original idea that responds to the urgent need to reduce the detrimental environmental impacts of load-bearing floor construction in new buildings by reusing saw-cut reinforced concrete (RC) pieces salvaged from soon-to-be demolished ...
