During an earthquake, steel frame buildings with bracings are prone to high absolute floor acceleration demands, thereby causing damage to acceleration-sensitive non-structural elements and building content. Inelastic deformations in steel bracings and/or ...

Passive energy dissipation devices are widely utilized in buildings to minimize structural and non-structural damage under seismic loading. Commonly used devices include, among others, yield, viscous and friction dampers. While the use of yield dampers, su ...

This paper examines the influence of framing action and slab continuity on the hysteretic behavior of composite steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs) by means of high-fidelity continuum finite-element (CFE) analyses of two-bay subsystems and typical crucifo ...

This paper proposes methodological developments for quantifying the impact of residual axial shortening of first-story steel columns on earthquake loss estimations in steel moment-resisting frame (MRF) buildings. A new formulation is proposed that accounts ...

Nonlinear static and dynamic analyses are utilized by engineers for performance-based seismic risk evaluation of new and existing structures. In this context, nonlinear component modeling criteria are typically based on ASCE 41 guidelines. Experiments on w ...

A new mixed-dimension coupling method is formulated for members with (bi-symmetric) wide flange cross sections based on the idea of least squares transformations between two sets of point clouds. This coupling method imposes the minimum number of constrain ...

Collapse in steel structures is often controlled by loss of load carrying capacity of steel columns due to interactive buckling, which involves interactions between local and global (i.e., lateral and lateral torsional) buckling. Commonly used concentrated ...

A 4-story steel moment-frame building designed according to ASCE 7 was used in a numerical parameter study to assess the effects of modeling features on peak drift demands. Features studied included strength, stiffness, ductility, and degradation along wit ...

Nonlinear dynamic (response history) analysis is being used increasingly in design practice for the performance-based seismic design of buildings. In contrast to nonlinear static analysis, dynamic analyses require more explicit modeling of cyclic response ...

Nonlinear dynamic (response history) analysis is being used increasingly in design practice for the performance-based seismic design of new buildings. In contrast to nonlinear static analysis, dynamic analysis requires more explicit modeling of cyclic resp ...

This paper presents results from an experimental evaluation on the pre- and post-buckling behavior of 12 steel wide-flange cantilever columns under axial load and lateral drift demands. The influence of several loading and geometric parameters, including t ...

This paper proposes a new mechanics-based model for the seismic design of beam-to-column panel zone joints in steel moment-resisting frames. The model is based on realistic shear stress distributions retrieved from continuum finite element (CFE) analyses o ...

Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.This paper presents a new uniaxial constitutive material formulation with softening for simulating the inelastic behavior of steel rectangular tubes in concrete-filled steel tu ...

Experimental data is imperative to characterize the behavior of materials used in structural analysis models. The aim of this data paper is to establish a database of material-scale uniaxial experiments, primarily conducted at EPFL, to assist with simulati ...

This study systematically investigated the effects of heat and thermomechanical treatments on the pseudo-elastic behavior of an Fe-based shape-memory alloy (Fe???17Mn???5Si???10Cr???4Ni-1(V, C) %wt.). First, samples were solution-annealed at 1000 ???C for ...

This paper discusses the findings from 10 full-scale steel column tests subjected to multiaxis cyclic loading. The columns use deep wide-flange cross sections typically seen in steel moment-resisting frames designed in seismic regions. The effects of bound ...

Deep and slender wide-flange steel beam-columns are commonly used in steel special moment frames (SMFs) in North America. These sections provide large moment-of-inertia required to satisfy the design code’s drift limits while keeping the column steel weigh ...

Recent seismic events have showcased the vulnerability of non-structural components to even low- or moderate-intensity earthquakes that occur far more frequently than design-basis ones. Thus, community-critical buildings, such as hospitals, telecommunicati ...

This paper proposes a novel multiaxial plasticity model for 3-dimensional nonlinear static analysis of steel frame buildings with fiber-based beam-column elements. The proposed constitutive formulation is expressed within the framework of rate-independent ...

This paper presents results from 21 large-scale experiments on steel columns that examined their collapse behavior as related to steel moment resisting frames (MRFs). The test specimens included wide-flange and square hollow structural shapes (HSS) and wer ...
