This study examines how land-use errors from the Land Transformation Model (LTM) propagate through to climate as simulated by the Regional Atmospheric Model System (RAMS). The authors conducted five simulations of regional climate over East Africa: one usi ...

Resolving the wind profile in an urban canyon environment means dealing with the turbulent nature of the stream and the presence of non-negligible flux exchanges with the atmosphere inside the canopy, making any deterministic model solution computationally ...

A paradigm change in energy system design tools, energy market, and energy policy is required to attain the target levels in renewable energy integration and in minimizing pollutant emissions in power generation. Integrating non-dispatchable renewable ener ...

High frequency wind time series measured at different heights from the ground (from 1.5 to 25.5 meters) in an urban area were investigated by using the variance of the coefficients of their wavelet transform. Two ranges of scales were identified, sensitive ...

The urban context is often simplified or neglected in Building Energy Models (BEMs) due to the difficulties of taking accurately into account all the heat fluxes emanating from the environment. Oversimplifying the urban context can impact the accuracy of t ...

A measurement campaign was set up in Lausanne. The objective of this study is to define the importance of using local meteorological variables in the design of urban spaces and in the evaluation of building energy use. Urban simulation tools typically use ...

The concept of Energy Hub (EH) is getting popular as a method to integrate non-dispatchable energy sources at building and neighbourhood scale with the support of energy storage and grid. It is interesting to study the effectiveness of EH concept to integr ...

In this paper, high frequency wind time series measured at different heights from the ground (from 5.5 to 25.5 meters) in an urban area were investigated. The spectrum of each series is characterized by a power-law behaviour at low frequency range, with a ...

In the present century, for the first time in history, the urban population overpassed the rural one. Cities are growing, and their impact on the world energy balance is significant. Consequently, a sustainable urban environment focusing on the reduction o ...

Clean, safe, affordable and available in the long-term, wind is one of the most promising sources of renewable energy. Its optimized and profitable use, however, requires an estimation of the potential in locations of interest, given its very volatile beha ...

Solar cooking is one possible solution to reduce the domination of fossil fuel in the domestic sector and to benefit from renewable energy. This study assesses the solar cooking potential in Switzerland. A nodal model, based on energy balance equations of ...

A 1D Canopy Interface Model (CIM) is developed to act as an interface between a meso-scale and a micro-scale atmospheric model and to better resolve the surface turbulent fluxes in the urban canopy layer. A new discretisation is proposed to solve the TKE e ...

The recent AR5 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has again stressed on the need for mitigation and adaptation measures to tackle issues related to climate change. Tackling future urban planning and energy efficiency in the building ...

A simulation tool (EcoSim) has been developed to analyse the economic and environmental aspects of the integration of several energy conversion units. For a given investment over 25 years, the tool calculates the self-consumption rate, the autonomy level, ...

An integrated approach is presented in this study to design electrical hubs combining optimization, multi-criterion assessment and decision making. Levelized Energy Cost (LEC), Initial Capital Cost (ICC), Grid Integration Level (GI), Levelized CO2 emission ...

To understand the urban environment from a meteorological perspective in order to design better and more sustainable neighbourhoods, an open-source and low-cost meteorological device was developed and tested at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne ...

Blinds are usually installed on building façade to improve the visual and thermal comfort of the oc-cupants. They are now often linked to an automat-ed system that helps control the glare and decrease overheating. These automated systems are linked to a we ...

This study evaluates the impact of urban planning decisions regarding building stock on energy system design and operation. Three urban planning scenarios are considered for an archetype neighbourhood in Nablus in Palestine. The distinguishing difference i ...
