Moving towards an increased understanding of the dynamic processes in the edge of tokamak plasmas requires continuous innovation in diagnostic capabilities, pushing the envelope in both spatial and temporal dimenstions. Plasma density and rotation, and the ...

Fusion power may be seen as the energy of the future in the sense that it composes a potentially clean, cheap and unlimited power source that would reduce the worldwide dependency on non-renewable energies. Nevertheless, while nowadays the fusion reaction ...

Tokamak à configuration variable (TCV), recently celebrating 30 years of near-continual operation, continues in its missions to advance outstanding key physics and operational scenario issues for ITER and the design of future power plants such as DEMO. The ...

Design and operation of future tokamak fusion reactors using a deuterium-tritium 50:50 mix requires a solid understanding of how energy confinement properties change with ion mass. This study looks at how turbulence and energy transport change in L-mode pl ...

This article presents the design, implementation, and first data of a uniquely flexible, multi-channel, frequency comb Doppler backscattering diagnostic recently made operational in the ASDEX-Upgrade tokamak [A. Gruber and O. Gruber, Fusion Sci. Technol. 4 ...

A series of experiments has been conducted at AUG and TCV to disentangle the role of fueling, plasma triangularity and closeness to a double null (DN) configuration for the onset of the small ELM regime. At AUG, the role of the SOL density has been revisit ...

The aim of this paper is to present a signal processing algorithm that, applied to the raw Locked Mode signal, allows us to obtain a disruption indicator in principle exploitable on different tokamaks. A common definition of such an indicator for different ...

Combining the analysis of multiple diagnostics and well-chosen prior information in the framework of Bayesian probability theory, the Integrated Data Analysis code (IDA Fischer et al 2010 Fusion Sci. Technol. 58 675-84) can provide density and temperature ...

This work presents the hardware design and first results from a newly commissioned correlation reflectometer radiometer diagnostic that measures the cross-phase angle between electron density and temperature fluctuations in ASDEX Upgrade plasmas. This diag ...

The tokamak a configuration variable (TCV) continues to leverage its unique shaping capabilities, flexible heating systems and modern control system to address critical issues in preparation for ITER and a fusion power plant. For the 2019-20 campaign its c ...

In ASDEX Upgrade, the propagation of cold pulses induced by type-I edge localized modes (ELMs) is studied using electron cyclotron emission measurements, in a dataset of plasmas with moderate triangularity. It is found that the edge safety factor or the pl ...

This article describes the realization of a novel approach to short pulse (∼1 ns) reflectometry (SPR) recently implemented in the tokamak configuration variable tokamak. Taking advantage of a fast arbitrary waveform generator and vector-network-analyzer ex ...

This publication presents high spatio-temporal resolution (mm/μs) density profile measurements of the pedestal top during type I, III, and small edge localized mode (ELM) H- mode plasmas in the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV). These measurements wer ...

The Correlation Electron Cyclotron Emission (CECE) diagnostic at ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is used to investigate the features of outer core and pedestal (rho(pol) = 0.85-1.0) turbulence across confinement regime transitions. The I-mode confinement regime is a p ...

A variable configuration V-band heterodyne Doppler back-scattering diagnostic has been recently made operational in the tokamak a configuration variable. This article describes the hardware setup options, flexible quasi-optical launcher antenna, data-analy ...

Plasma start-up is typically achieved manipulating poloidal magnetic fields, gas injection and possibly auxiliary heating. Model-based design techniques have been gaining increasing attention in view of future large tokamaks which have more stringent const ...

In this paper we validate the finite element code RAPLICASOL, which models radiofrequency wave propagation in edge plasmas near ICRF antennas, against calculations with the TOPICA code. We compare the output of both codes for the ASDEX Upgrade 2-strap ante ...
