The distribution of spatially aggregated data from a stochastic process may exhibit tail behaviour different from that of its marginal distributions. For a large class of aggregating functionals we introduce the -extremal coefficient, which quantifies this ...

Peaks-over-threshold analysis using the generalised Pareto distribution is widely applied in modelling tails of univariate random variables, but much information may be lost when complex extreme events are studied using univariate results. In this paper, w ...

Major sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are extreme wintertime circulation events of the Arctic stratosphere that are accompanied by a breakdown of the polar vortex and are considered an important source of predictability of tropospheric weather on subs ...

On average every 2 years, the stratospheric polar vortex exhibits extreme perturbations known as sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs). The impact of these events is not limited to the stratosphere: but they can also influence the weather at the surface of ...

Background: Transposable elements (TEs) have colonized the genomes of most metazoans, and many TE-embedded sequences function as cis-regulatory elements (CREs) for genes involved in a wide range of biological processes from early embryo- genesis to innate ...

Max-stable processes are increasingly widely used for modelling complex extreme events, but existing fitting methods are computationally demanding, limiting applications to a few dozen variables. r-Pareto processes are mathematically simpler and have the p ...

In 2019, Eliud Kipchoge ran a sub-two hour marathon wearing Nike's Alphafly shoes. Despite being the fastest marathon time ever recorded, it wasn't officially recognized as race conditions were tightly controlled to maximize his success. Besides, Kipchoge' ...
