Surface sediments can accumulate contaminants that affect microorganisms and invertebrates and disturb benthic ecological functions. However, effects of contaminants on ecological functions supported by sediment communities are understudied. Here, we teste ...

Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) contain complex mixtures of chemicals and release them to the environment, and potential toxic effects of these chemicals still need to be characterized. We used a standardized surrogate for TRWP,cryogenically milled tire ...

Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) are generated by the abrasion of tires while driving, and recent questions were raised in regards to their potential contribution to microplastics released into the aquatic environment and their potential toxicological i ...

Negative impacts of human activities on stream ecosystems include the reduction/modification of the connectivity between surface water and groundwater and the contamination of these resources. Vertical hydrological exchanges principally occur through the c ...

Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) have been shown to represent a large part of anthropogenic particles released into the environment. Nevertheless, the potential ecological risk of TRWP in the different environmental compartments and their potential toxi ...

The presence of the oligochaete species Quistadrilus multisetosus (Smith, 1900) originating from North America has been mentioned for several decades in Europe, the Middle East and Russia. Its distribution and abundance in Europe is still unknown but it ca ...

Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) resulting from tire abrasion while driving raise concerns due to their potential contribution to aquatic toxicity. Our study aimed to assess cryogenically milled tire tread (CMTT) particle toxicity, used as a proxy for T ...

Legacy (i.e., polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD)) and alternative halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) were analyzed in 31 whole fish samples from Lake Geneva in 2018. Two fish species, namely, the burbot (Lota lota) a ...

There is a growing interest in the development of reliable analytical methods for characterizing tire and road wear particles (TRWP). The current research extends the use of single particle analysis techniques to various experimental biota samples. TRWP an ...

Aquatic oligochaete communities are valuable indicators of the biological quality of sediments in streams and lakes, but identification of specimens to the species level based on morphological features requires solid expertise in taxonomy and is possible o ...

For several decades, the abundance and community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates have been studied to assess the biological quality of aquatic ecosystems. Procedures aiming at studying the whole of macroinvertebrate communities were mainly designed ...

Tire wear particle emissions in the environment have low risk prioritization. This has been estimated from data on terrestrial and aquatic exposure and hazard. The risk of tire leachables is not yet known due to inconsistency in hazard data. ...

Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) account for an important part of the polymer particles released into the environment. There are scientific knowledge gaps as to the potential bioaccessibility of chemicals associated with TRWP to aquatic organisms. This ...

Tread wear emission inventories, uncertainty about the future development of the emissions and observed adverse effects of tire constituents in the environment have raised the need for an environmental risk assessment of tire wear emissions. While progress ...

Aquatic oligochaetes, comprising a large number of species showing various degrees of resistance to chemical pollution, are recognized as valuable bioindicators of sediments’ quality. In the Geneva area (Switzerland), oligochaete tools were previously test ...
