Pollution, congestion and urbanistic considerations are leading to a change in the use of private vehicles in dense city centers. More frequently, the last-mile is covered with systems such as public transport, car sharing and bike sharing as well as an in ...

We introduce a probabilistic modeling approach for pedestrian speed density relationship. It is motivated by a high scatter in real data that precludes the use of traditional equilibrium relationships. To characterize the observed pattern, we relax the hom ...

Greenhouse gas emissions related to energy production is the main cause of climate change. Transportation accounts for 30% of the total energy consumption, and a reduction in the energy used for mobility is necessary. The 2000-watt society is an environmen ...

Moving walkways (MW) have been imagined as a possible means of transport since the late 19th century, and this system has fascinated urban planners and engineers ever since. Contrary to what has been imagined, moving walkways are only used in transportatio ...

Congestion at motorway junctions is a traffic phenomenon that degrades operation of infrastructure and can lead to breakdown of traffic flow and associated reduction in capacity. Advanced communication technologies open new possibilities to prevent or at l ...

Emerging in-car communication technologies continually offer new communication capabilities between vehicles and infrastructure that, together with more accurate positioning systems, can be used to improve the use of current infrastructure. The aim of this ...

Electric mobility is now a reality, and services based on electric vehicles, such as electric car-sharing and electric buses, are becoming part of urban mobility. These new modes bring new challenges for the design and operations of the systems that requir ...

Exploiting the full potential of pedestrian infrastructure is becoming critical in many environments which cannot be easily expanded to cope with the increasing pedestrian demand. This is particularly true for train stations as in many dense cities space i ...

Pedestrian mobility is at the center of urban transportation systems. Therefore, understanding it is a necessary task to improve the mobility in cities. However, pedestrian mobility is extremely complex, and advance methods are needed to capture its dynami ...

A framework for assessing the usage and level-of-service of rail access facilities is presented. It consists of two parts. A dynamic demand estimator allows to obtain time-dependent pedestrian origin-destination demand within walking facilities. Using that ...
