The very shallow geothermal potential (vSGP) is increasingly recognized as a viable resource for providing clean thermal energy in urban and rural areas. This is primarily due to its reliability, low-cost installation, easy maintenance, and little constrai ...

Various aspects of the built environment have important effects on ecology. Providing suitable metrics for the built forms so as to quantify and model their internal relations and external ecological footprints, however, remains a challenge. Here we provid ...

Street networks can be visualized in various ways depending on the purpose. Here we introduce (in the present context) a new technique for visualizing the orientation of street networks in relation to complex topography. The technique is tested on the city ...

There have been many studies on the spatial configuration of cities, but few attempts to quantify the difference in building patterns between the old and new parts of cities. This may be partly attributable to lack of suitable study methods. This paper pre ...

A 45-km-long regional dike was emplaced over a period of 2 weeks in August 2014 at the boundary between the East and North Volcanic Zones in Iceland. This is the first regional dike emplacement in Iceland monitored with modern geophysical networks, the imp ...

This study aims to investigate the role of distributed generation through the energy hub concept and refurbishment of existing buildings. More specifically, a computational platform combining (i) the urban energy modelling tool CitySimPro and (ii) the micr ...

Solar energy deployment through PV installations in urban areas depends strongly on the shape, size, and orientation of available roofs. Here we use a machine learning approach, Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification, to classify 10,085 building roofs ...

Urban greening has great ecological, social and economic benefits for the built environment. It also has significant impacts on the microclimate and urban energy balance. In this study, we quantify the impacts of urban greening on the ground surface temper ...

The street-network efficiency of tens of British cities in relation to transport fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are analyzed. The results show a strong linear positive correlation between length entropy and average street length, and a negative correla ...

How green or environmentally friendly urban areas are in comparison with rural areas is a topic that has received much attention in recent years. This is understandable because urban areas already emit around 70% of the global greenhouse gases. This percen ...

While the effects of street-canyon configuration on temperature, wind speed and direction, and air quality have received much attention, its impact on solar energy potential has not been much studied. This paper focuses on two aspects of the street-canyon ...

The integration of renewable energy technologies and building renovation are the two main procedures for improving energy sustainability of buildings at neighborhood scale. It is difficult, however, to optimize these procedures simultaneously. This study f ...

We propose a methodology combining physical modelling and machine learning (ML) to estimate the apparent ground thermal diffusivity at the scale of a country. Based on ground temperature time series at different depths, we estimate the diffusivity at 49 Sw ...

The total population of the United Kingdom is expected to increase from 63 million in 2011 to 73 million people in 2037. This is an increase by 16% in 26 years, which puts the urban infrastructure, particularly the transportation infrastructure, under grea ...

This paper focuses on roof-shape classification and solar potential for integrating photovoltaics (PV) on roofs. A machine-learning approach, Support Vector Machine (SVM), is used to classify the roof shapes in the city of Geneva. The impact of various roo ...

The integration of renewable energy in the built environment, improving the energy efficiency of buildings, and optimizing distributed energy systems are three interconnected activities that are central for the transition to sustainable cities. Here, a met ...

The integration of renewable energy technologies in the existing energy infrastructure plays a key role in improving the sustainability of cities. Due to the stochastic nature of some renewable energy sources, primarily wind and solar energy, direct integr ...

Assessing the relationship between neighbourhood morphology and urban climate is becoming increasingly important as cities continue to grow and the climate continues to change. Here we focus on the impact of (1) shapes and sizes of buildings, (2) street la ...

Compactness is a major urban form parameter that affects the accessibility of solar energy in the built environment. Here we explore the relation between various compactness indicators and solar potential in the 16 neighbourhoods (11,418 buildings) constit ...

New quantitative measures of urban structural changes are introduced and applied to the fast-growing city of Kerman, Iran. The results of 20,802 street measurements show that the main street orientations are orthogonal, both in the old inner part and in th ...
