The thesis focuses on producing renewable fuels by direct conversion of concentrated solar energy via photoelectrochemical (PEC) approaches, which is one viable route for renewable fuel processing and energy storage. The aim of the Ph.D. thesis is to asses ...

The direct conversion of solar energy and water into a storable fuel via integrated photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices is investigated. Particularly, the proposed device uses concentrated solar irradiation in order to minimize the amount of rare and expens ...

Device and system design choices for solar energy conversion and storage approaches require holistic design guidelines which simultaneously respect and optimize technical, economic, sustainability, and operating time constraints. We developed a simulation ...

Understanding the dynamic response of a solar fuel processing system utilizing concentrated solar radiation and made of a thermally-integrated photovoltaic (PV) and water electrolyzer (EC) is important for the design, development and implementation of this ...

We investigate the direct conversion of solar energy and water into a storable fuel via integrated photo-electrochemical (IPEC) devices. Here we focus particularly on a device design which uses concentrated solar irradiation to reduce the use of rare and e ...

The production of synthetic fuels and chemicals from solar energy and abundant reagents offers a promising pathway to a sustainable fuel economy and chemical industry. For the production of hydrogen, photoelectrochemical or integrated photovoltaic and elec ...

Achieving high current densities while maintaining high energy conversion efficiency is one of the main challenges for enhanc-ing the competitiveness of photo-electrochemical devices. We describe a concept that allows this challenge to be overcome by opera ...

A reversible photo-electrochemical device operating under concentrated irradiation could offer a stand-alone solution for producing solar fuel (in photo-driven electrolysis mode) and power (in fuel cell mode). This strategy would present the advantage of h ...

We numerically investigate the conversion of solar energy into chemical energy by integrated photo-electrochemical (IPEC) devices and assess their response to time-dependent changes in the boundary conditions and the material properties. We focus on a devi ...

The present invention relates to a photo-electrochemical device for production of a gas, liquid or solid using concentrated electromagnetic irradiation. The device comprises a photovoltaic component configured to generate charge carriers from the concentra ...
