Employing geostructures as structural supports and geomaterials as reservoirs for the extraction and storage of heat represent effective means to meet human activity needs since ancient times. This doctoral thesis focuses on the thermo-mechanical behaviour ...

This study focuses on the analysis of the energy performance and economic feasibility of so-called tunnel energy segmental linings: an innovative technology that couples the structural support role of the tunnel lining with the heating-cooling role of the ...

Energy piles are rapidly gaining acceptance around the world because they represent a renewable and clean source of energy that can be used for the heating and cooling of buildings, and the de-icing of infrastructures. This technology couples the structura ...

The behaviour of conventional pile groups (e.g., closely spaced) that are subjected to mechanical loads has been shown to be different than the behaviour of single isolated piles. The so-called group effects are responsible for this behaviour and must be c ...

Over the last fifty years, the interaction factor method has been widely used to address the vertical displacement and the increased deformation of conventional pile groups subjected to mechanical loads when group effects and interactions occur among the p ...

This study presents a fundamental investigation of the convection heat transfer phenomenon driven by airflows in underground tunnels, with reference to the development of the so-called thermal and velocity boundary layers. The purpose of the work is to exp ...

This study presents an equivalent pier analysis of the vertical deformation and displacement of full-scale pile groups subjected to mechanical and thermal loads that are associated with a structural support and a geothermal heat exchanger operation, respec ...

This study presents a method for estimating the average vertical displacement of energy pile groups subjected to thermal loads. The method consists of replacing any regular energy pile group with a single equivalent pier of the same length and an equivalen ...

This paper investigates the impact of the thermally induced deformation of soil on the serviceability mechanical performance (i.e., deformation-related) of energy pile groups. The work is based on the results of a full-scale in-situ test that was performed ...

Prior to this study, no simplified yet rational methods were available for estimating the vertical displacements of energy pile groups subjected to thermal loads. Observing such a challenge, the goal of this study has been threefold: (i) to extend the inte ...

Over the past two decades, the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of earth-contact structures such as piles, walls, slabs, and tunnels, which simultaneously provide structural support and energy supply, has been studied through various field experiments and ...

This paper expands on the impact of the thermally induced deformation of the soil on the serviceability mechanical performance (i.e., deformation-related) of energy pile groups. The work is based on the results of a full-scale in-situ test that was perform ...

Over the past twenty years, an increasing amount of research has been performed to understand the multiphysical behaviour and to address the geotechnical and structural design of so-called energy piles, i.e. deep foundations that can serve any superstructu ...

Energy piles are heat capacity systems that have been increasingly exploited to provide both supplies of energy and structural support to civil structures. The energy and geotechnical behaviours of such foundations, which are governed by their response to ...

Currently, although several tools have been proposed for the numerical modelling of the pile-soil interface, there is not a well-established framework concerning the quantitative impact that different estimations of the mechanical properties of this settin ...

This study proposes an analysis of the multiphysical phenomena and mechanisms governing the thermo-mechanical behaviour of energy piles. The analysis is based on the results of a series of full-scale in-situ tests, laboratory experiments and numerical anal ...

Currently, the suitability of centrifuge testing for capturing the thermal-induced mechanical behavior of full-scale energy piles has not been established, yet, despite their increasing worldwide development. Looking at this challenge, this paper investiga ...

Over the past two decades, a substantial amount of research has investigated the effects of thermal loads associated with the geothermal operation of energy piles on their mechanical response. Based on this research, consensus about the need for considerin ...
