In this paper, we present a performance analysis of the European Cooperation for Lightning Detection (EUCLID) lightning detection network using data obtained on lightning currents measured at the Santis Tower (located in northeastern of Switzerland) from J ...

In addition to the general aims of lightning research such as lightning physics and meteorology, the study of upward lightning is of particular importance in protection of tall objects such as wind turbines and telecommunication towers. It also helps us in ...

In this paper, we analyze the propagation effects on lightning-radiated electromagnetic fields over mountainous terrain by using a three-dimensional (3-D) finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. We also discuss the time delay error in the time-of-arri ...

The purpose of the paper is to investigate charge transfer modes in upward lightning flashes by means of numerical simulation constrained by concurrent observations of electromagnetic fields and currents. In particular, we focus on different types of pulse ...

Lightning striking tall towers is mainly of the upward lightning type, which is characterized by the absence of a first return stroke and the presence of an initial continuous current (ICC) with or without superimposed pulses. The Santis Tower is 124 m tal ...

We present simultaneous current and wideband electric field waveforms at 380 km associated with upward lightning flashes initiated from the Santis Tower, Switzerland. To the best of our knowledge, the dataset presented in this study includes the first simu ...

The response of local lightning to local surface temperature is examined near the Säntis mountain (2502 m ASL) in the eastern Swiss Alps during the first of the two hiatuses in global warming covering the time periods 1940-1972 and 1998-2014. The mountain ...

In this article, we propose a novel approach for the localization of electromagnetic interference (EMI) sources based on the concept of compressive sensing and metalenses. We show that using the spatial and frequency dispersion offered by the metalens, we ...

We present and discuss current waveforms associated with 13 bipolar lightning flashes recorded at the Santis Tower during the period from June 2010 to January 2015. During this period, a total of 427 flashes were recorded, of which 13 (3%) were classified ...

We present and discuss the current and electric field waveforms associated with two upward bipolar lightning flashes that occurred at the Säntis Tower. According to the traditional classification of bipolar flashes, both observed flashes could be classifie ...

We present a study focused on pulses superimposed on the initial continuous current of upward negative discharges. The study is based on experimental data consisting of correlated lightning current waveforms recorded at the instrumented Santis Tower in Swi ...

The authors present an analysis of different charge transfer modes during upward negative flashes. The analysis includes a total number of 94 pulses that occurred during two upward negative flashes recorded at the Säntis Tower. The pulses included 59 mixed ...

The localization of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) sources is very important in Electromagnetic Compatibility applications. Recently, a novel localization technique based on the Time Reversal Cavity (TRC) concept was proposed using only one sensor. In ...

In this paper, the time reversal (TR) technique is extended to localize a partial discharge (PD) source in the acoustic regime. The proposed acoustic TR method consists of three steps, a) the acoustic waves emitted by the PD source are recorded by at least ...

We report the observation of three negative upward flashes recorded by a high-speed camera at the Säntis Tower during the Summer of 2019. The camera was operating at 10,000 fps and an exposure time of 99 μs. Simultaneous measurements of the lightning curre ...

In this paper, we present a theoretical analysis of the propagation effects of lightning electromagnetic fields over a mountainous terrain. The analysis is supported by experimental observations consisting of simultaneous records of lightning currents and ...

A method for locating one or multiple partial discharge sources in a power transformer or a Gas-Insulated Substation, whereby the partial discharges emit electromagnetic and acoustic waves, the method comprising recording a signal corresponding to the wave ...

Upward lightning happens predominantly from tall objects. The channel-base currents associated with upward negative lightning initiated from towers exhibit pulses that can be classified, based on their waveform features and on the concurrence with other pr ...
