Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease characterized by circulating autoantibodies, lymphocytic infiltration of pancreatic islets of Langerhans, and cell-specific destruction of beta cells, leading to insulin deficiency and symptomatic hyperglycemi ...

The inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA is synthesized by the enzyme glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) in neurons and in pancreatic β-cells in islets of Langerhans where it functions as a paracrine and autocrine signaling molecule regulating the function of i ...

Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) with PD-1 or PD-L1 antibodies has been approved for the treatment of nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, only a minority of patients respond, and sustained remissions are rare. Both chemotherapy and antiangiogenic d ...

Pancreatic islet β-cells are particularly susceptible to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, which is implicated in β-cell dysfunction and loss during the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes (T1D). The peripheral membrane protein GAD65 is an autoantigen in huma ...

Aim: To study the specificity of cellular MRI based on superparamagnetic iron oxide particles (SPIOs), especially within the CNS. Materials & methods: A microglial cell line was engineered for the expression of a suicide gene, the receptor of diphtheria to ...

We describe a lentivirus-encoded chimeric receptor, termed extracellular vesicle (EV)-internalizing receptor (EVIR), which enables the selective uptake of cancer-cell-derived EVs by dendritic cells (DCs). The EVIR enhances DC presentation of EV-associated ...

The target autoantigens in several organ-specific autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes (T1D), are intracellular membrane proteins, whose initial encounter with the immune system is poorly understood. Here we propose a new model for how these prot ...

Pancreatic beta cells synthesize and secrete the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) as a paracrine and autocrine signal to help regulate hormone secretion and islet homeostasis. Islet GABA release has classically been described as a secretory- ...

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes, modulate multiple aspects of cancer biology. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) secrete EVs, but their molecular features and functions are poorly characterized. Here, we report methodology for the enrichm ...

We present optofluidic label-free biosensors leveraging high quality-factor resonances emanated from bound-states-in-the-continuum and novel data processing. The sensors are based on imaging and offer solutions to remove sophisticated spectroscopy instrume ...

Biosensors are indispensable tools for public, global, and personalized healthcare as they provide tests that can be used from early disease detection and treatment monitoring to preventing pandemics. We introduce single-wavelength imaging biosensors capab ...
