Vortex-carrying matter waves, such as chiral electron beams, are of significant interest in both applied and fundamental science. Continuous-wave electron vortex beams are commonly prepared via passive phase masks imprinting a transverse phase modulation o ...

Holography relies on the interference between a known reference and a signal of interest to reconstruct both the amplitude and the phase of that signal. With electrons, the extension of holography to the ultrafast time domain remains a challenge, although ...

In the quest for dynamic multimodal probing of a material's structure and functionality, it is critical to be able to quantify the chemical state on the atomic-/nanoscale using element-specific electronic and structurally sensitive tools such as electron e ...

Ultrafast interfacial electron transfer in sensitized solar cells has mostly been probed by visible-to-terahertz radiation, which is sensitive to the free carriers in the conduction band of the semiconductor substrate. Here, we demonstrate the use of deep- ...

Conventional electron microscopy operates with flat electron wave fronts. Employing attenuative or electrostatic phase plates allows transversally modulating the wave front, enhancing cross-sections of particular scattering channels. Utilization of light f ...

Using femtosecond-resolved photoluminescence up-conversion, we report the observation of the fluorescence of the high-lying ligand-centered (LC) electronic state upon 266 nm excitation of an iridium complex, Ir(ppy)(3), with a lifetime of 70 +/- 10 fs. It ...

The electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of quantum solids are determined by their low-energy (

We combine fluorescence up-conversion and time correlated single photon counting experiments to investigate the 5-benzyl uracil excited state dynamics in methanol from 100 fs up to several ns. This molecule has been proposed as a model for DNA/protein inte ...

Excited-state dynamics and electronic structures of Al and Ga corrole complexes were studied as a function of the number of beta-pyrrole iodine substituents. Using spectrally broad-band femtosecond-resolved fluorescence upconversion, we determined the kine ...

The optical bandgap of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles is dominated by bulk absorption bands in the deep-ultraviolet due to strongly bound excitons. These spectral features can be utilized as a sensitive probe of carrier and lattice dynamics inside the TiO2 nan ...

Femtosecond broadband photoluminescence studies are presented for Ir(ppy)(3) (Ir1), Ir(ppy)(2)(pic) (Ir2), Ir(ppy)(2)(bpy)(PF6) (Ir3), Ir(ppz)(3) (Ir4), and Ir(ppz)(2)dipy (Ir5) (where ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, pic = picolinate, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, ppz = ...

The bioprotective nature of disaccharides is hypothesized to derive from the modification of the hydrogen bonding network of water which protects biomolecules through lowered water activity at the protein interface. Using ultrafast fluorescence spectroscop ...
