Remote Procedure Calls are widely used to connect datacenter applications with strict tail-latency service level objectives in the scale of µs. Existing solutions utilize streaming or datagram-based transport protocols for RPCs that impose overheads and li ...

Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), such as Intel SGX enclaves, use hardware to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of operations on sensitive data. While the technology is available on many processors, the complexity of its programming model and i ...

Energy proportionality and workload consolidation are important objectives towards increasing efficiency in large-scale datacenters. Our work focuses on achieving these goals in the presence of applications with microsecond-scale tail latency requirements. ...

Tail-latency tolerance (or just simply tail-tolerance) is the ability for a system to deliver a response with low-latency nearly all the time. It it typically expressed as a system metric (e.g., the 99th or 99.99th percentile latency) or as a service-level ...

Datacenter operators rely on low-cost, high-density technologies to maximize throughput for data-intensive services with tight tail latencies. In-memory rack-scale computing is emerging as a promising paradigm in scale-out datacenters capitalizing on commo ...

We present LANCET, a self-correcting tool designed to measure the open-loop tail latency of µs-scale datacenter applications with high fan-in connection patterns. LANCET is self-correcting as it relies on online statistical tests to determine situations in ...

The conventional wisdom is that aggressive networking requirements, such as high packet rates for small messages and microsecond-scale tail latency, are best addressed outside the kernel, in a user-level networking stack. We present IX, a dataplane operati ...

Programming languages and systems have failed to address the security implications of the increasingly frequent use of public libraries to construct modern software. Most languages provide tools and online repositories to publish, import, and use libraries ...

In today’s modern datacenters, the waiting time spent within a server’s queue is a major contributor of the end-to-end tail latency of μs-scale remote procedure calls. In traditional TCP, congestion control handles in-network congestion, while flow control ...

This article describes the historical context, technical challenges, and main implementation techniques used by VMware Workstation to bring virtualization to the x86 architecture in 1999. Although virtual machine monitors (VMMs) had been around for decades ...

Emerging datacenter applications operate on vast datasets that are kept in DRAM to minimize latency. The large number of servers needed to accommodate this massive memory footprint requires frequent server-to-server communication in applications such as ke ...

With emerging storage-class memory (SCM) nearing commercialization, there is evidence that it will deliver the much-anticipated high density and access latencies within only a fewfactors of DRAM. Nevertheless, the latency-sensitive nature of memory-residen ...

Trusted execution environments enable the creation of confidential and attestable enclaves that exclude the platform and service providers from the trusted base. From its initial attestable state, a stateful enclave such as a confidential database can hold ...

One of the most energy-draining and frustrating parts of software development is playing detective with elusive bugs. In this paper we argue that automated post-mortem debugging of failures is feasible for real, in-production systems with no runtime record ...

In online data-intensive (OLDI) services, each client request typically executes on multiple servers in parallel; as a result, “system hiccups”, although rare within a single server, can interfere with many client requests and cause violations of service-l ...

Datacenter-networking research requires tools to both generate traffic and accurately measure latency and throughput. While hardware-based tools have long existed commercially, they are primarily used to validate ASICs and lack flexibility, e.g. to study n ...

Software is going through a trust crisis. Privileged code is no longer trusted and processes insufficiently protect user code from unverified libraries. While usually treated separately, confidential computing and program compartmentalization are both symp ...

Serverless computing has seen rapid adoption due to its high scalability and flexible, pay-as-you-go billing model. In serverless, developers structure their services as a collection of functions, sporadically invoked by various events like clicks. High in ...

We propose a new system-level abstraction, the lightweight immutable execution snapshot, which combines the immutable characteristics of checkpoints with the direct integration into the virtual memory subsystem of standard mutable address spaces. The abstr ...

Cloud platform services must simultaneously be scalable, meet low tail latency service-level objectives, and be resilient to a combination of software, hardware, and network failures. Replication plays a fundamental role in meeting both the scalability and ...
