The great challenge of massively integrating the volatile distributed power-generation into the power system is strongly related to the evolution of their operation and control. The literature of the last decade has suggested two models for such an evoluti ...

We compute an optimal day-ahead dispatch plan for distribution networks with stochastic resources and batteries, while accounting for grid and battery losses. We formulate and solve a scenario-based AC Optimal Power Flow (OPF), which is by construction non ...

The provision of energy at the local level by using renewable and local resources is increasingly acknowledged as a techno-economic solution for rural electrification. This work describes an approach for implementing microgrid projects at the institutional ...

The objective of this paper is to analyze the value of energy replacement in the context of demand response. Energy replacement is defined as the possibility of the consumer to choose the most convenient source for providing space heating to a smart buildi ...

Deploying a power grid controller in the field makes it susceptible to message losses caused by the inherent uncertainties and non-idealities of communication networks, especially when the control action is taken at a sub-second time-scale. We consider a c ...

Due to the increasing presence of renewable inertia-less energy sources, power electronics interfaces are required to exploit their flexibility in order to support the overall grid quality of service. One way to achieve this, is that power converters are c ...

The conventional approach for the control of distribution networks, in the presence of active generationand/or controllable loads and storage, involves a combination of both frequency and voltage regulation atdifferent time scales. With the increased penet ...

The existing approaches to control electrical grids combine frequency and voltage controls at different time-scales. When applied in microgrids with stochastic distributed-generation, grid quality of service problems may occur, such as under- or overvoltag ...

Supercapacitors-based storage systems are expected to play a key role in microgrids in view of their capability to compensate high-power imbalances. We define an agent for the control of supercapacitor arrays within the context of the novel control framewo ...

This paper presents a systematic approach for abstracting the flexibility of a building space heating system and using it within a composable framework for real-time explicit power control of microgrids and, more in general, active distribution networks. I ...

In real-time control of electric grids using multiple software agents, the control performance depends on (1) the proper functioning of the software agents, i.e., absence of software faults, and (2) the behavior of software agents in the presence of non-id ...

An electric vehicle (EV) charging method which considers the EVs heterogeneity, taking into account the absence of any information about future arrivals and departures, and of the amount of time any charging will take. The method further considers both swi ...

The invention provides a method for coping with an unintentional islanding of an electrical distribution grid within a Commelec-type framework for the real-time control of micro-grids, of Resource Agents (RA) controlled by Grid Agents (GA), comprising at l ...

Upon an intentional or emergency disconnection from the main grid, a microgrid is expected to continue working in islanded mode. Thus, (at least) one resource needs to act as slack and compensate for power variations to keep the power balance, and ensure t ...

Aggregation of electric resources is a fundamental function for the operation of power grids at different time scales. In the context of a recently proposed framework for the real-time control of microgrids with explicit power setpoints, we define and form ...

In this second part, we evaluate the performances of our control framework by applying it to a casestudy that contains a minimum set of elements allowing to show its applicability and potentials. Weshow how the computation of the PQt profiles, belief funct ...

We consider a microgrid with real-time control using explicit power-setpoints. Sudden power-steps, such as load disconnections or load in-rushes, directly affect the decisions of the microgrid controller that aims at avoiding voltage or line-ampacity viola ...

We propose a method to perform a safe unintentional islanding maneuver of microgrids. The method is derived in the context of a framework for the real-time control of microgrids, called Commelec, recently proposed by the authors. The framework uses a hiera ...
