The increasing penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) at the low and medium-voltage levels is determining major changes in the operational procedures of distribution networks (DNs) that are evolving from passive to active power grids. Such evol ...

The evolution toward emerging active distribution networks (ADNs) can be realized via a real-time state estimation (RTSE) application facilitated by the use of phasor measurement units (PMUs). A critical challenge in deploying PMU-based RTSE applications a ...

The paper presents the design principles of a Phasor Data Concentrator (PDC) that implements both the absolute and relative time data pushing logics together with a third one that aims at minimizing the latency introduced by the PDC without increasing the ...

A method for performing synchrophasor estimation of an input signal, whereby the input signal is a sinusoidal power system voltage or current signal, comprising: a. Periodic sampling of a continuous time-domain waveform, consisting of a power system voltag ...

The Interpolated Discrete Fourier Transform (IpDFT) represents the current state-of-the-art about DFT-based synchrophasor estimation (SE) algorithms for P-class Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). However, the IpDFT is not robust against the interference prod ...

A method for a faulted line identification in a power network, including, at a generic time-instant, solving a plurality of parallel phasor measurement units based real-time state estimators, the state estimators having among each other different and augme ...

The simulation of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) into real-time simulators (RTSs) is typically limited by the complexity of the synchrophasor estimation (SE) algorithm. This is especially true when dealing with distribution network PMUs due to the more de ...

We describe the real-time monitoring infrastructure of the smart-grid pilot on the EPFL campus. We experimentally validate the concept of a real-time state-estimation for a 20 kV active distribution network. We designed and put into operation the whole inf ...

The accurate measurement of synchrophasors in static and dynamic power network conditions represents one of the main requirements of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). International Standards (i.e. the IEEE C37.118) are quickly evolving to drive the technolo ...

The application of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) to the real-time monitoring, protection and control of Distribution Networks, requires the availability of high accuracy devices that are characterized at the same time by a reasonable cost. This paper pre ...

The paper describes the development of a Hardware- in-the-Loop (HIL) test platform for the performance assessment of a PMU-based sub-second linear Real-Time State Estimator (RTSE) for Active Distribution Networks (ADNs). The estimator relies on the availab ...

We intend to prove that PMU-based state estimation processes for active distribution networks exhibit unique time determinism and refresh rate that make them suitable to satisfy the time-critical requirements of protections as well as the accuracy requirem ...

The literature on the subject of synchrophasor estimation (SE) algorithms has discussed the use of interpolated discrete Fourier transform (IpDFT) as an approach capable to find an optimal tradeoff between SE accuracy, response time, and computational comp ...

The paper describes the development and the performance assessment of a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test platform built as a proof-of-concept of a sub-second State Estimator (SE) of Active Distribution Networks (ADNs). The SE relies on the availability of d ...

In recent years, the Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) technology is rapidly evolving towards the potential deployment also in power distribution systems (DSs). In general, this specific field of applications requires PMUs whose accuracy levels are beyond thos ...

We present a single synchrophasor estimation (SE) algorithm that is simultaneously compliant with both P and M phasor measurement unit (PMU) performance classes. The method, called iterative-interpolated discrete Fourier transform (i-IpDFT), iteratively es ...

IEEE C37.118 is the current standard for synchrophasor measurements in power systems. It defines the measurement method and communication protocols for the entities in a synchrophasor network. The standard offers two different modes for client-server commu ...

The field of application of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) might be limited by the PMU measurements reporting latencies and achievable reporting rates, particularly with respect to power system protection applications that typically require very low laten ...
