Single-emulsion toluene oil droplets (femtoliter) containing a hydrophobic redox probe that are dispersed in water stochastically collide with an ultramicroelectrode (UME). The fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) or Fourier-transformed sinusoidal voltammet ...

The generation of α-ferrocenyl carbocations from ferrocenyl alcohols for SN1 substitution at the water–organic solvent interface is initiated by the transfer of protons into the organic phase. The proton flux, and hence the reaction rate, can be controlled ...

In this work, the viability of polyaniline as a solid charge storage material in an aqueous redox-mediated flow battery is investigated. Fe(III/II) and V(IV/III) were identified as potential redox mediators to target the emeraldine-pernigraniline and leuco ...

Soft or “liquid-liquid” interfaces were functionalized by half a monolayer of mirror-like nanofilms of gold nanoparticles using a precise interfacial microinjection method. The surface coverage of the nanofilm was characterized by ion transfer voltammetry. ...

Photo-ionic cells are a simple and scalable concept for direct solar energy storage, where the redox fuels produced by the photoreaction are separated in different phases to prevent recombination. The presence of chaotropic agents such as urea, that break ...

A solar energy conversion concept based on the photo-induced separation of a pair of redox species in a biphasic liquid cell is presented. The redox pair is subsequently discharged in an electrochemical flow cell to generate electricity. To illustrate this ...

The redox properties of metallic nanoparticles are discussed, in particular the relationships between excess charge, size and the Fermi level of the electrons. The redox potentials are derived using simple electrostatic models to provide a straightforward ...

Upon metal-metal contact, a transfer of electrons will occur between the metals until the Fermi levels in both phases are equal, resulting in a net charge difference across the metal-metal interface. Here, we have examined this contact electrification in b ...

An all-copper redox flow battery based on strong complexation of Cu+ with acetonitrile is demonstrated, exhibiting reasonable battery performance. More interestingly, the battery can be charged by heat sources of 100 degrees C, by distilling off the aceton ...

The present work describes the application of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in the feedback mode to determine the kinetics of oxygen reduction at or near the liquid/liquid interface – between water and 1,2-dichloroethane (w/DCE). The system co ...

A battery utilizing the Galvani potential difference between aqueous and organic phases is demonstrated. The battery consists of two organic redox electrolytes separated by an immiscible aqueous phase. The charge is stored by transferring a salt from the a ...

All redox flow batteries suffer from low energy storage density in comparison with conventional Li-ion batteries. However, this issue can be mitigated by utilization of solid energy storage materials to enhance the energy storage capacity. In this paper we ...

Redox electrocatalysis (catalysis of electron-transfer reactions by floating conductive particles) is discussed from the point-of-view of Fermi level equilibration, and an overall theoretical framework is given. Examples of redox electrocatalysis in soluti ...

Control over the physical properties of nanoparticle assemblies at a liquid–liquid interface is a key technological advancement to realize the dream of smart electrovariable nanosystems. Electrified interfaces, such as the interface between two immiscible ...

The mechanism of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at a liquid|liquid interface, employing ferrocene (Fc) derivatives – such as decamethylferrocene (DMFc) – as a lipophilic electron donor along with sulfuric acid as an aqueous proton source, was elucidat ...

The MnO4–/MnO42– redox couple has a positive redox potential, high electrochemical reversibility and high solubility, up to 3.62 M at room temperature. Careful optimization of the electrolyte composition and the potential limits eliminates the side reactio ...

Lithium cations are shown to have a significant role on catalyzing oxygen and proton reduction along with SN1 reactions in biphasic systems. We propose that this catalytic effect is due to the surprising acidity of the hydrated cations; interactions betwee ...

The activities of a series of MoS2-based hydrogen evolution catalysts were studied by biphasic reactions monitored by UV/Vis spectroscopy. Carbon supported MoS2 catalysts performed best due to an abundance of catalytic edge sites and strong electronic coup ...

Citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles were found to spontaneously self-assemble into a lustrous film at a bare water–propylene carbonate interface after vigorous shaking, due to the extremely low interfacial tension. The presence of an electron donor, tetr ...
