Influenza A virus (IAV) has a segmented genome that allows for the exchange of genome segments between different strains. This reassortment accelerates evolution by breaking linkage, helping IAV cross species barriers to potentially create highly virulent ...

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is exquisitely adapted to the human host, and much research has focused on its evolution over long timescales spanning millennia. Here, we review recent data exploring the evolution of the virus on much shorter timescales, on t ...

The KRAB-containing zinc finger (KRAB-ZF) proteins represent the largest family of transcription factors (TFs) in humans, yet for the great majority, their function and specific genomic target remain unknown. However, it has been shown that a large fractio ...

Ultraviolet light in the UVC range is a commonly used disinfectant to control viruses in clinical settings and water treatment. Here, we employed an experimental evolution approach to investigate the adaptation of human echovirus 11 to disinfection by UVC, ...

Summary Understanding the peopling of the Americas remains an important and challenging question. Here, we present 14C dates, and morphological, isotopic and genomic sequence data from two human skulls from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, part of one of ...

Adaptive evolution in new or changing environments can be difficult to predict because the functional connections between genotype, phenotype, and fitness are complex. Here, we make these explicit connections by combining field and laboratory experiments i ...

Underlying any understanding of the mode, tempo and relative importance of the adaptive process in the evolution of natural populations is the notion of whether adaptation is mutation limited. Two very different population genetic models have recently been ...
