Water is the liquid of life thanks to its three-dimensional adaptive hydrogen (H)-bond network. Confinement of this network may lead to dramatic structural changes influencing chemical and physical transformations. Although confinement effects occur on a < ...

The microscopic description of the interface of colloidal particles in solution is essential to understand and predict the stability of these systems, as well as their chemical and electrochemical reactivity. However, this description often relies on the u ...

A recent communication by Roger and Cabane[1] on the origin of negative charge on the interface between oil and water states that: "The basic assumption of all previous experimental and theoretical studies has been that these systems have "pristine" oil/wa ...

Many biological systems are composed of nanoscale structures having hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups adjacent to one another and in contact with aqueous electrolyte solution. The interaction of ions with such structures is of fundamental importance. Alth ...

We report a combined vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), and ellipsometry study of different surfactants on water as a function of surfactant density. Vibrational SFG spectra of surfactants on the water ...

Water is the matrix of life and serves as a solvent for numerous physical and chemical processes. The origins of the nature of inhomogeneities that exist in liquid water and the time scales over which they occur remains an open question. Here, we report fe ...

Understanding the structure and dynamics of water's constituent ions, proton and hydroxide, has been a subject of numerous experimental and theoretical studies over the last century. Besides their obvious importance in acid-base chemistry, these ions play ...

Understanding the mechanism of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the oxidative half of electrolytic water splitting, has proven challenging. Perhaps the largest hurdle has been gaining experimental insight into the active site of the electrocatalyst use ...

The interface between water and folded proteins is very complex. Proteins have "patchy" solvent-accessible areas composed of domains of varying hydrophobicity. The textbook understanding is that these domains contribute additively to interfacial properties ...

Membrane potential fluctuations have previously been detected using second harmonic (SH) water imaging on neuronal cells and model lipid bilayer membranes. We report that such fluctuations are also visible when membrane potential-sensitive fluorophores are ...

Amphiphiles, under appropriate conditions, can self-assemble into nanoscale thin membrane vessels (vesicles) that encapsulate and hence protect and transportmolecular payloads.Vesicles assemble naturally within cells but can also be artificially synthesize ...

Polarimetric angle-resolved second-harmonic scattering (AR-SHS) is an all-optical tool enabling the study of unlabeled interfaces of nano-sized particles in an aqueous solution. As the second harmonic signal is modulated by interference between nonlinear c ...

The interfaces of water micro- and nanodroplets drive environmental, medical, catalytic, biological, and chemical biphasic processes. The interfacial droplet structure and electrostatics greatly determine the reactivity and efficiency of these processes. D ...

Hyaluronan (HA) is an anionic, highly hydrated bio-polyelectrolyte found in the extracellular environment, like the synovial fluid between joints. We explore the extended hydration shell structure of HA in water using femto-second elastic second-harmonic s ...

We present a direct comparison of phase sensitive sum-frequency generation experiments with phase reconstruction obtained by the maximum entropy method. We show that both methods lead to the same complex spectrum. Furthermore, we discuss the strengths and ...

We present sum frequency scattering spectra on kinetically stabilized emulsions consisting of nanoscopic oil droplets in water, stabilized with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). We have measured the interfacial structure of the alkyl chains of the surfactant m ...

Nano -and microparticles have optical, structural, and chemical properties that differ from both their building blocks and the bulk materials themselves. These different physical and chemical properties are induced by the high surface-to-volume ratio. As a ...

Second-harmonic scattering (SHS) experiments provide a unique approach to probe noncentrosymmetric environments in aqueous media, from bulk solutions to interfaces, living cells, and tissue. A central assumption made in analyzing SHS experiments is that ea ...

The hydrophobic-water interface plays a key role in biological interactions. However, both the hydrophobic-water interfacial molecular structure and the origin of the negative zeta potential of hydrophobic droplets in water are heavily contested. We report ...

Cell-sized giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) are an ideal tool for understanding lipid membrane structure and properties. Label-free spatiotemporal images of their membrane potential and structure would greatly aid the quantitative understanding of membran ...
