The European DEMO, i.e. the demonstration fusion power plant designed in the framework of the Roadmap to Fusion Electricity by the EUROfusion Consortium, is approaching the end of the pre-conceptual design phase, to be accomplished with a Gate Review in 20 ...

The present work is performed within the framework of the EUROfusion DEMO project. Previously, it was demonstrated that for a maintained magnetic flux the use of HTS conductors at highest magnetic field in a layer-wound CS coil would allow the reduction of ...

Quench protection is a critical issue for magnet using high-temperature superconducting (HTS) materials such as REBCO. For cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) with twisted REBCO tapes, which is considered for high-current HTS conductor for fusion magnet, the ...

High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) are promising materials for future fusion magnets. One of HTS conductors' main issues is the quench protection: the quench develops much slower than in LTS, delaying the quench detection by voltage monitoring and caus ...

Knowledge of the actual Nb3Sn filaments' thermal strain, epsilon(th), in a cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) is essential to predict the CICC performance in operation starting from the strand scaling laws for the critical current density J(c)(B, T, epsilon ...

During the test of ITER conductors at nominal conditions, a degradation of the current sharing temperature has been observed after electromagnetic cyclic loading. Rather than focusing on the microscopic phenomena at the origin of the degradation, the degra ...

Almost all present High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) cable designs for magnets are based on twisted or transposed concepts that were developed for Low Temperature Superconducting (LTS) cables. However, requirements for LTS materials (like filament twi ...

Coated conductors are promising material for the construction of high field magnets, but the slow propagation velocity of the normal zone makes the protection against quenches a critical issue. The quench protection system for a small insert coil under dev ...

Seven different high current conductors for fusion applications, made of High Temperature Superconducting stacked tapes, have been successfully tested in the Quench Experiment campaign supported by EUROfusion and carried out in SULTAN. The aim of this exte ...

High-field accelerator magnets of the next generation will require coil grading in order to decrease the amount of superconductor and hence the magnet cost. The joints between Nb3Sn conductor grades must have low electrical resistance (

In the last few years, the current density of Bi-2212 wires has been greatly improved by filament densify technologies. One further step toward applications in fusion magnets is to design a high current cable, which must overcome the drawbacks of Bi-2212 w ...

Electric dipole moments (EDM) of fundamental particles inherently violate time-reversal (T) and the combined charge-conjugation and parity symmetry (CP). We aim to measure the EDM of the muon using the frozen-spin technique within a compact storage trap. T ...

Several conductor designs featuring High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) stacked tapes for fusion coils are being proposed. These conductors are planned to operate in time-varying magnetic field and current; thus, the estimation of AC losses is fundament ...

The next generation magnetic spectrometer in space, AMS-100, is designed to have a geometrical acceptance of 100 m(2) sr and to be operated for at least ten years at the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2. Compared to existing experiments, it will improve the sens ...

Various techniques have been proposed in order to assemble coated conductor tapes into high current strands. In this work, the preparation of high current capacity round strands starting from industrial coated conductors has been investigated. Round, twist ...

Ta and Ti are the most widely used additions for technical Nb3Sn multifilamentary superconductors. These elements are known to influence grain growth, grain morphology and chemical composition in the A15 layer, hence the current carrying properties of the ...

State-of-the-art high field solenoids make use of hybrid designs exploiting the superior high field performance of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) in the innermost region. The benefits of a hybrid Central Solenoid in a pulsed tokamak like the EU DEM ...

Conductors using High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) tapes are considered as a very promising solution for future high-field fusion magnets. Various HTS cable concepts, such as e.g. twisted stack cable, cross-conductor (CroCo), Roebel assembled coated co ...

In the last twenty years, a number of studies have been dedicated to the development of thin ceramic coating for the electrical insulation of Ag-sheathed Bi-2212 wires. Instead of preparing a coating by mixing different compounds in house, this technical n ...

The measurement of the actual thermal strain, epsilon th, in a cable in conduit conductor (CICC) of Nb3Sn is of paramount importance to predict the CICC performance in operation starting from the strand scaling laws for the critical current density J(c)(B, ...
