Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is commonly known as a powerful probe of the one-electron removal spectral function in ordered solid state. With increasing efficiency of light sources and spectrometers, experiments over a wide range of em ...

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) has rapidly become a mature spectroscopic technique. In particular, taking advantage of an improved energy resolution, a series of experiments performed over the past 5 years have established soft X-ray RIXS as a ...

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are emerging strong players in many domains, ranging from superconductivity, to microelectronics to spintronics to light harvesting for photovoltaics. Beyond their non-toxicity, low corrosiveness and low price, they exhibit a ...

We observe a giant spin-orbit splitting in the bulk and surface states of the noncentrosymmetric semiconductor BiTeI. We show that the Fermi level can be placed in the valence or in the conduction band by controlling the surface termination. In both cases, ...

LiCu3O3 is an antiferromagnetic mixed valence cuprate where trilayers of edge -sharing Cu(II)O (3d9) are sandwiched in between planes of Cu(I) (3d10) ions, with Li stochastically substituting Cu(II). Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and de ...

We investigate the evolution of both the occupied and unoccupied electronic structure in representative compounds of the infinitely adaptive superlattice series (Sb2)m−Sb2Te3 (m=0–3) by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and time-delayed tw ...

We measured, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the electronic structure of LiCu2O2, a mixed-valence cuprate where planes of Cu(I) (3d(10)) ions are sandwiched between layers containing one-dimensional edge-sharing Cu(II) (3d(9)) chains. We find ...

We investigate by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering the magnetic excitations in thin films of tetragonal CuO. We identify a spin wave excitation, dispersing on two cupratelike antiferromagnetic sublattices. Its energy at the boundary of the Brillouin zon ...

We report a comprehensive study of the paradigmatic quasi-1D compound (TaSe4)(2)I performed by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles electronic structure calculations. We find it to be a zero-gap semiconductor in t ...

A method for lithographic patterning of an insulating or semiconducting solid state material in crystalline form, said method comprising a step where said material is exposed to an amount of radiation which is sufficient to change its insulating or semicon ...

A paradigmatic case of multi-band Mott physics including spin-orbit and Hund's coupling is realized in Ca2RuO4. Progress in understanding the nature of this Mott insulating phase has been impeded by the lack of knowledge about the low-energy electronic str ...

We investigate the polaronic ground state of anatase TiO2 by bulk-sensitive resonant inelastic x-ray spectroscopy (RIXS) at the Ti L-3 edge. We find that the formation of the polaron cloud involves a single 95 meV phonon along the c axis, in addition to th ...

We investigated the ferroelectric perovskite material BaTiO3 by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ti L-3 edge. We observe with decreasing temperature a transfer of spectral weight from the elastic to the charge-transfer spectral features, i ...

We report an investigation of the structural and electronic properties of a Pb monolayer (ML) grown on Ag(1 0 0), by combining x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The Pb atoms are found to arrange in ...

Oxygen vacancies created in anatase TiO2 by UV photons (80–130 eV) provide an effective electron-doping mechanism and induce a hitherto unobserved dispersive metallic state. Angle resolved photoemission reveals that the quasiparticles are large polarons. T ...

We argue that tetragonal CuO (T-CuO) has the potential to finally settle long-standing modeling issues for cuprate physics. We compare the one-hole quasiparticle (qp) dispersion of T-CuO to that of cuprates, in the framework of the strongly correlated (U-d ...

We present an overview of the new family of semiconductors BiTeX (X = I, Br, Cl) from the perspective of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The strong band bending occurring at the surface potentially endows them with a large flexibility, as they a ...

We investigate by angle-resolved photoemission the electronic structure of in situ grown tetragonal CuO, a synthetic quasi-two-dimensional edge-sharing cuprate. We show that, in spite of the very different nature of the copper oxide layers, with twice as m ...
