The recently proposed concept of metamaterials has opened exciting venues to control wave-matter interactions in unprecedented ways. Here, we demonstrate the relevance of metamaterials for inducing acoustic birefringence, a phenomenon which has already fou ...

Achieving strongly nonreciprocal scattering in compact linear acoustic devices is a challenging task. One possible solution is the use of time-modulated resonators; however, their implementation in the realm of audible airborne acoustics is typically hinde ...

This paper proposes a novel technique for the design of miniaturized Ka-band filters based on locally resonant metamaterials (LRMs), which are fabricated monolithically using lost wax casting. We implement ultra-small metamaterial filters by exploiting a n ...

Initially proposed to achieve strong noise isolation levels beyond the mass-density law, acoustic metamaterials (AMMs) have now overturned the conventional views in all aspects of sound propagation and manipulation. In fact, within the last two decades, th ...

Introducing non-local effects to metamaterials increases the complexity of their dispersion relation, which allows carefully designed elastic structures to mimic the peculiar roton behaviour of correlated quantum superfluids. ...

We introduce an active concept for achieving acoustic metasurfaces with steerable reflection properties, effective over a wide frequency band. The proposed active acoustic metasurface consists in a surface array of subwavelength loudspeakers diaphragms, ea ...

Locally-resonant metamaterial crystals are artificial materials built from small spatially-local resonant inclusions arranged periodically at subwavelength scale. Unlike conventional continuous metamaterials, for which spatial dispersion originates mostly ...

Scalar waves such as airborne sound lack an intrinsic spin degree of freedom, making the realization of sonic Z2 topological phases based on spin degeneracy challenging. Here, we demonstrate the relevance of synthetic dimensions and higher-dimensional topo ...

A passive device comprising a hollow waveguide including first and second wall structures extending in a guiding direction, an interconnecting base extending between the wall structures and an enclosure extending between the wall structures, the enclosure ...

Coherent perfect absorption (CPA), or anti-lasing, has been so far inherently restricted to continuous wave scenarios, drastically restricting its applications to standard linear steady-state systems. However, future technologies based on enhanced light-ma ...

The non-Hermitian skin effect is an intriguing physical phenomenon, in which all eigenmodes of a non-Hermitian lattice become localized at boundary regions. While such an exotic behavior has been demonstrated in various physical platforms, most realization ...

In this paper, we study the behavior of miniaturized high-order waveguide filters, constructed by loading a hollow metallic waveguide with resonant pins, to form a locally-resonant metamaterial. Such composite pin-pipe structure supports a guided-mode with ...

… and annoys everyone with unsolicited experiments. The present paper proposes a short pedagogical review of the various phenomena that can be observed in a coffee cup with little to no equipment. The physical domains spanned include acoustics, optics, and ...

Real‐world resonances face surface‐scaling radiation leakage, hindering light confinement in optically large systems. Conventional bound states in continuum (BICs) challenge this by enabling states with theoretically infinite lifetimes in 2D periodic struc ...

The Fano resonance is a widespread wave scattering phenomenon associated with a peculiar asymmetric and ultrasharp line shape, which has found applications in a large variety of prominent optical devices. While its substantial sensitivity to geometrical an ...

An acoustic dimer composed of two electronically controlled electroacoustic resonators is presented with the view of exploring one-dimensional topological phenomena. Active control allows real-time manipulation of the metamaterial’s properties, including i ...

The interaction of optical and mechanical degrees of freedom can lead to several interesting effects. A prominent example is the phenomenon of optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT), in which mechanical movements induce a narrow transparency window i ...

We introduce a Lamb-wave medium with tunable propagation velocities, which are controlled by a two-dimensional heating pattern produced by a laser beam. We utilized it to demonstrate that waves in an appropriately designed medium can propagate in the form ...

Inspired to discoveries in condensed matter systems, topological insulators (TIs) for classical waveWaves systems have been recently unveiled in various platforms. AcousticsAcoustics in particular offers a well-established playground to realize topological ...

In this talk, we describe excitation of time-varying dipolar particles (time-modulated meta-atoms) by external time-varying fields from a nonstationary and causal perspective. For a time-harmonic excitation, we introduce a complex-valued function, called t ...
