The present investigation is concerned with transient wave propagation in a rock mass with a set of parallel joints by using a recursive method. According to the displacement field of a rock mass with a set of parallel joints, the interaction between four ...

The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of filling materials (e.g., quartz sand and kaolin clay) in the interaction between a P-wave and a rock fracture. The specific fracture stiffness reflects the seismic response of a filled fracture, while ...

This paper presents an analytical study on normally incident wave propagation across a joint set. Combined with the displacement discontinuity method (DDM), the virtual wave source method (VWSM) is adopted to take account of multiple wave reflections among ...

Joints are an important mechanical feature of rock masses. Their effect on wave propagation is significant in characterizing dynamic behaviors of discontinuous rock masses. An experimental study on wave propagation across artificial rock joint was carried ...

Drill and blast is a major method for bed rock excavation in nuclear power plant engineering. Under blasting excavation, blast-induced vibration propagates in rock mass and induces damage to surrounding rock. Studying the characteristics of wave propagatio ...

A search is presented for high-mass exclusive diphoton production via photon-photon fusion in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV in events where both protons survive the interaction. The analysis utilizes data corresponding to an integrated lumino ...

Complex oxides show extreme sensitivity to structural distortions and defects, and the intricate balance of competing interactions which emerge at atomically defined interfaces may give rise to unexpected physics. In the interfaces of non-magnetic complex ...

BackgroundObtaining accurate displacement measurements for large material deformation and/or rotation presents a distinct challenge to digital image correlation (DIC) due to cumulative and decorrelation errors, particularly near material boundaries.Objecti ...

The purpose of this study is to analytically predict and to experimentally investigate the seismic response of adjacent filled parallel rock fractures with dissimilar properties (e.g., fracture thickness and stiffness). The time-domain recursive method is ...

A three-phase medium model is proposed in describing the dynamic property of filled rock joints and an analytical study on longitudinal wave transmission normally across a three-phase rock joint is presented. Parameters in the three-phase medium model were ...

As a key dynamic feature of the rock mass, joint results in wave attenuation when a stress wave propagates across it. An experimental study has obtained the relation between the transmission coefficient and the contact area ratio of joints with different t ...

Rock joints are often filled with weak medium, for example, saturated clay or sand, of viscoelastic nature. Their effects on wave propagation can be modelled as displacement and stress discontinuity conditions. The viscoelastic behaviour of the filled join ...

The present study essentially employs a thin-layer interface model for filled rock joints to analyze wave propagation across the jointed rock masses. The thin-layer interface model treats the rough-surfaced joint and the filling material as a continuum med ...

Joints are important mechanical and hydrological features of rock masses, and they can greatly affect wave propagation and attenuation across jointed rock masses. Joints often contain liquid, and the presence of liquid will change the mechanical behaviors ...

Stochastic seismic wave interaction with a slippery rock fault is studied, based on the principle of conservation of momentum at the wave fronts along the fault. By using the displacement discontinuity method, the wave propagation equations are derived for ...

An equivalent viscoelastic medium model is proposed for rock mass with parallel joints. A concept of "virtual wave source (VWS)'' is proposed to take into account the wave reflections between the joints. The equivalent model can be effectively applied to a ...

Different methods are presently available for the analysis of wave propagation across jointed rock masses with the consideration of multiple wave reflections between joints. These methods can be divided into two categories. One is based on the displacement ...

The production cross section of a top quark pair in association with a photon is measured in proton-proton collisions in the decay channel with two oppositely charged leptons (e(+/-)mu(-/+), e(+)e(-), or mu(+)mu(-)). The measurement is performed using 138 ...
