The paper focuses on the numerical investigation of SentryGlas®(SG)-laminated reinforced glass beams. This structural typology, rather innovative and currently under investigation, consists of a composite section in which the typical brittle behaviour of g ...

The recent demand for architectural transparency has drastically increased the use of glass material for structural purpose. However, connections between structural glass members represent one of the most critical aspects of glass engineering, due to the f ...

This paper focuses on the numerical modelling of SentryGlas-laminated reinforced glass beams. In these beams, which have been experimentally investigated in preceding research, a stainless steel reinforcement section is laminated at the inner recessed edge ...

Transparent polymer interlayers are usually adopted to laminate glass members dealing with structural roles. Currently, they are also used to realize laminated adhesive connec-tions joining structural glass components (e.g. steel-to-glass connections). Res ...

The recent demand for architectural transparency has drastically increased the use of glass material also for structural purpose. However, connections between structural glass members represent one of the most critical aspects of glass engineering, due to ...

This paper presents a study on post-tensioned glass beams in a statically indeterminate system. In order to increase the safety of structural glass beams, ductile reinforcement can be added to glass beam sections providing secondary load carrying mechanism ...

In modern buildings, glass is increasingly used as a load-carrying material in structural components, such as glass beams. For glass beams especially the edge strength of glass is important. However, the strength of glass is not a material constant but dep ...

This paper investigates the structural response of laminated glass beams under combined fire-exposure and sustained in-plane loading. This is done by means of experimental testing and Finite Element (FE) numerical modelling. Firstly, small-scale (1 m long) ...

Knowledge of failure strength is the key to structural glass applications. However, the influence of the manufacturing process on the failure initiation at the glass edge is not well known. For this paper, small-scale glass specimens are tested in four-poi ...

This paper presents a study of a system of post-tensioned structural glass beams. In order to increase the initial fracture strength of glass beams and provide residual load-carrying capacity in the event of glass failure, annealed laminated glass beams ar ...

In the evolution of structural glass beam elements, the requirements for post-fracture load bearing capacity and safe failure behaviour have led to the development of reinforced and post-tensioned beams. Maximum bending capacity in the post-fracture state ...

This paper presents the results of long term experiments of four point bending test with structural laminated glass plates. For experiments 6 mm thick annealed Soda-Lime-Silica Glass and three different interlayer laminates were used: Polyvinyl butyral (PV ...

This paper investigates the effects of glass type (annealed, heat-strengthened and fully tempered), reinforcement percentage (hollow section and full section) and beam size (1.5 and 3.2 m) on the structural response of SG-laminated reinforced glass beams. ...

Glass used in buildings is often exposed to sources of surface damage which can have a significant effect on its strength. Existing research suggests that the flaws in glass can successfully be repaired by transparent polymeric resins, but the reasons for ...

The following paper explores the application of hybrid timber-glass elements on semi-continuous architectural structures. The use of glass as a structural material opens multiple fields of investigations. Beyond structural matters and safety issues, archit ...

This paper discusses two projects on post-tensioned glass beams, performed at EPFL and DTU, respectively. In these projects small scale glass beams (length of 1.5m and 1m) are post-tensioned by means of steel threaded rods tensioned at the beam ends. The p ...

SentryGlas®(SG)-laminated reinforced glass beams are numerically investigated. This innovative structural typology consists of a composite section in which the typical brittle behaviour of glass is overcome by means of stainless steel sections able to prov ...

The mechanical response of post-tensioned glass beams is explored in this paper. This is done through bending experiments on post-tensioned glass beam specimens with either mechanically anchored or adhesively bonded steel tendons by which a beneficial pre- ...

This paper investigates whether a novel computational sequentially linear analysis (SLA) technique, which is especially developed for modeling brittle material response, is applicable for modeling the structural response of metal reinforced glass beams. To ...
