A 2D plane-strain dynamically propagating crack under tensile loading is simulated with cohesive elements. Information of the main crack is extracted from a diffuse crack network with the use of graph properties. Micro-transgranular fracture properties are ...

A new version of GBS (Ricci et al. (2012) [27]; Halpern et al. J. Comput. Phys. 315 (2016) 388-408; Paruta et al. (2018) [11]) is described. GBS is a three-dimensional, fluxdriven, global, two-fluid turbulence code developed for the self-consistent simulat ...

The bond shear strength between masonry units and mortar is the weakest link in a masonry wall. Different material tests have been developed in order to characterize this bond behaviour. The objective of this study is to evaluate three common test setups t ...

Induced seismicity caused by anthropogenic modification of the subsurface effective stress state has been observed in a number of industrial applications -- from hydrocarbon extraction (e.g., Groningen [1]), drilling waste-water disposal (e.g., [2]) to the ...

Dynamic crack branching instabilities in a brittle material are studied numerically by using a non-local damage model. PMMA is taken as our model brittle material. The simulated crack patterns, crack velocities and dissipated energies, compare favorably to ...

Dynamic fragmentation is a rapid and catastrophic failure of a material. During this process, the nucleation, propagation, branching, and coalescence of cracks results in the formation of fragments. The numerical modeling of this phenomenon is challenging ...

The aim of this work is to take full advantage of Spectral Element (SE) and Finite Element (FE) codes by setting up a SEM/FEM co-simulation strategy for soil structure interaction problems, involving a SE code to generate and propagate elastic waves in the ...

Simulating the force-deformation behavior of stone masonry is a challenging issue. This paper contributes to this topic by developing a detailed micro-modeling method using extrinsic cohesive elements. To consider contact and friction, a new node-to-node a ...

This paper presents an efficient method to implement a damage law within an explicit time-integration scheme, in an open-source object-oriented finite-element framework. The hybrid object/vector design of the framework and implementation choices are detail ...
