Bed joint reinforcement significantly affects the shear capacity of masonry walls due to its effective ability to transfer shear forces through a diagonal crack, but how does this phenomenon impact its drift capacity? This paper presents an experimental st ...

The severe damage and collapse of many reinforced concrete (RC) wall buildings in the recent earthquakes of Chile (2010) and New Zealand (2011) have shown that RC walls did not perform as well as required by the modern codes of both countries. It seems the ...

The Unreinforced Wall (URM) elements that are most susceptible to out-of-plane failure are wall elements of the upper storeys where the accelerations are largest. In modern URM buildings with reinforced concrete slabs, the out-of-plane mechanism involves t ...

In many historical centers in Europe, stone masonry is part of building aggregates, which developed when the layout of the city or village was densified. The analysis of such building aggregates is very challenging and modelling guidelines missing. Advance ...

In the framework of Performance Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE), assessing the inelastic behaviour of structures both at the global (force-displacement) and local (stress-strain) level is of priority importance. This goal is typically achieved by advan ...

A mechanical model is presented for predicting the momentrotation relationship of interior slab-column connections without transverse reinforcement when subjected to seismically induced drifts. The model accounts explicitly for the three load-transfer acti ...

Experimental results obtained from shake-table tests on complete unreinforced masonry buildings (URM) play a crucial role in enhancing modeling techniques and reducing uncertainties in seismic assessments for this type of building. This paper presents an o ...

The mechanical response of stone masonry depends on the properties of the components and also on the typology created by the stone units and the mortar joints. While the influence of the component strength on masonry is relatively well studied, few studies ...

Previous test data on unreinforced masonry walls focused on the global response of the wall. A new data set (Petry and Beyer 2014a; D01:10.5281/zenodo.8443) on six wall tests, which is publicly available, allows for linking global to local deformations of ...

Existing loading protocols for quasi-static cyclic testing of structures are based on recordings from regions of high seismicity. For regions of low to moderate seismicity they overestimate imposed cumulative damage demands. Since structural capacities are ...

This paper describes quasi-static cyclic shear-compression tests on six plastered single-leaf stone masonry walls. Of the six walls, four are tested under different axial load ratios, performing a cyclic load history with two cycles per increasing drift de ...

Despite the fact that displacement-based methods are now frequently applied when assessing the seismic performance of unreinforced masonry (URM) structures, the displacement capacity of in-plane loaded URM piers is still estimated from empirical rather tha ...

Masonry buildings form building aggregates around the world in historical centers, which developed as the layout of the city or village densified. In these aggregates, adjacent buildings can share structural walls, connected at the interfaces by interlocki ...

Currently, post-earthquake assessment is performed visually, which implies that inspectors visit the damaged buildings and, based on their expertise, assign a damage grade. Yet, visual inspection is subjective, time-consuming and difficult to document. In ...

The use of thin reinforced concrete walls (thickness of 8 to 12 cm) in Latin America has become a popular building construction practice in the last two decades. Several existing studies indicate that the inelastic deformation capacity could be limited and ...

In modern unreinforced masonry (URM) walls, the vertical piers are connected at the storey levels by reinforced concrete (RC) ring beams or RC slabs. Particularly, in the outer walls, the spandrel element also includes a masonry spandrel on top of the RC b ...

Masonry building aggregates can be found throughout historical city centers of Europe. Adjacent buildings have often developed during the long densification process, without consistent planning or engineering. It is common for neighboring units to share a ...

The current provisions for the braking force in the Eurocodes are much more demanding than previously enforced national codes from most European countries. Hence, safety assessments of existing bridges may show a lack of compliance with the new safety requ ...

There is limited available research on rubble stone masonry walls, which are vulnerable under seismic loading. This paper presents an experimental campaign of cyclic shear compression tests on six large-scale walls of this topology. The effect of the axial ...
