Traffic dynamics have been the focal point of research aiming to provide a better understanding of traffic phenomena and to be integrated in traffic management for recurrent congestion. The aim of the study is to ameliorate complex highway and/or freeway n ...

Last-mile delivery in the logistics chain contributes to congestion in urban networks due to frequent stops. Crowd-shipping is a sustainable and low-cost alternative to traditional delivery but relies heavily on the availability of occasional couriers. In ...

Traffic-responsive signal control is a cost-effective, easy-to-implement, network management strategy, bearing high potential to improve performance in heavily congested networks with dy-namic traffic characteristics. Max Pressure (MP) distributed control ...

Network travel time reliability can be represented by a relationship between network space-mean travel time and the standard deviation of network travel time. The primary objective of this paper is to improve estimation of the network travel time reliabili ...

Accurate prediction of travel time is an essential feature to support Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The non-linearity of traffic states, however, makes this prediction a challenging task. Here we propose to use dynamic linear models (DLMs) to a ...

Perimeter control based on Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) aims to meter the number of transferring vehicles at the periphery of the protected urban region in order to obtain the desired number of vehicles in that region. The advantage of perimeter c ...

The usage of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) in traffic monitoring has advantages such as broader vision, flexibility, privacy, and cost-efficiency compared to other traffic monitoring sensors like loop detectors or fixed surveillance cameras. UAS has been i ...

Macroscopic fundamental diagrams (MFDs) have been widely adopted to model the traffic flow of large-scale urban networks. Coupling perimeter control and regional route guidance (PCRG) is a promising strategy to decrease congestion heterogeneity and reduce ...

Multivariate time series forecasting poses challenges as the variables are intertwined in time and space, like in the case of traffic signals. Defining signals on graphs relaxes such complexities by representing the evolution of signals over a space using ...

Real traffic data and simulation analysis reveal that for some urban networks a well-defined Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) exists, which provides a unimodal and low-scatter relationship between the network vehicle density and outflow. Recent studie ...

Since centralized control of urban networks with detailed modeling approaches is computationally complex, developing efficient hierarchical control strategies based on aggregate modeling is of great importance. The dynamics of a heterogeneous large-scale u ...

Recent research has studied the existence and the properties of a macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) for large urban networks. The MFD should not be universally expected as high scatter or hysteresis might appear for some type of networks, like heteroge ...

Pricing is considered an effective management policy to reduce traffic congestion in transportation networks. In this paper we combine a macroscopic model of traffic congestion in urban networks with an agent-based simulator to study congestion pricing sch ...

Carpooling is an efficient measure to fight car ownership and reduce vehicle kilometres travelled. By individuals sharing their commutes, vehicle occupancy increases and congestion is reduced. We develop a dynamic ADL (Arnott, de Palma, Lindsey)-Vickrey ap ...

This paper contributes to the intersection of operations research and machine learning in the context of autonomous ridesharing. In this work, autonomous ridesharing operations are reproduced through an event-based simulation approach and are modeled as a ...

Different than the conventional queueing systems, in spatial queueing systems (SQS) the service rate for each customer-server pairs differs and the server that intervenes for a specific customer is not known a priori, depending on the availability of serve ...

Dedicated bus lanes provide a low cost and easily implementable strategy to improve transit service by minimizing congestion-related delays. Identifying the best spatial distribution of bus-only lanes in order to maximize traffic performance of an urban ne ...

Monitoring outdoor urban parking areas has traditionally relied on either costly sensing technology, such as ground sensors, or manual inspections, which are both resource-intensive. The emergence of drones equipped with advanced visual sensors provide a c ...

Most feedback perimeter control approaches that are based on the Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) and are tested in detailed network structures restrict inflow from the external boundary of the network. Although such a measure is beneficial for the ne ...

Research on congestion propagation in large urban networks has been based mainly on microsimulations of link-level traffic dynamics. However, both the unpredictability of travel behavior and the complexity of accurate physical modeling present challenges, ...
