The built environment currently represents the largest sector in terms of final energy consumption, both in Switzerland and the European Union. Most of the associated energy services, such as space heating and potable hot water preparation, are mainly sati ...

The optimisation of distributed and renewable energy systems in buildings has shown that zero energy systems, using existing technologies, is within reach in the household sector where the thermal and the systems can support each other to increase renewabl ...

This paper presents a preliminary assessment of the potential economic benefit resulting from the use of smart energy management systems in buildings. The proposed approach relies on the application of model predictive control (MPC) and a self-consumption ...

A fully renewable Europe is a major climate goal and an assumed priority by the European Union. However, intermittent renewables require hefty backup power sources to compensate for sudden generation shortfalls, ensuring grid stability and balance across t ...

In order to fully exploit the potential of renewable energy resources (RERs) for building applications, opti- mal design and control of the different energy systems is a compelling challenge to address. This paper presents a two-step multi-objective optimi ...

The integration of renewable energy sources within the built environment is a compelling challenge to tackle. With the recent climate targets aiming at a carbon neutral energy supply by the mid-century, a modern building energy system (BES) should maximize ...

This paper presents a flexible and modular control scheme based on distributed model predictive control (DMPC) to achieve optimal operation of decentralized energy systems in smart grids. The proposed approach is used to coordinate multiple distributed ene ...

The computing platform (OSMOSELua) has been developed in the Industrial Process and Energy Systems Engineering group IPESE at EPFL as a flexible and robust tool for the design of complex integrated energy systems. The decision tool has been developed using ...

Based on the analysis of the reference case, models developed at the PVLAB-EPFL and IPESEEPFL have been valued and improved to assess the impact of distributed generation and ancillary services on REel demonstrator. The models are used to evaluate solution ...

Integrating intermittent renewable energy sources has renders the power network operator task of balancing electricity generation and consumption increasingly challenging. Aside from heavily investing in additional storage capacities, an interesting soluti ...

The increasing use of renewable energy is a deep going trend mainly supported by the sustained annual growth rate of solar photovoltaic, wind power and biogases. The expansion and evolution of the distribution grids is therefore a key issue to ensure a sec ...

Under Energy Strategy 2050, the federal government of Switzerland plans to greatly reduce per capita energy consumption, decrease the share of fossil fuels, and replace the nuclear electricity generation by gains in efficiency and use of renewable energy s ...
