The investigation of the static and dynamic structural properties of colloidal systems relies on techniques capable of atomic resolution in real space and femtosecond resolution in time. Recently, the cross-correlation function (CCF) analysis of both X-ray ...

In the quest for dynamic multimodal probing of a material's structure and functionality, it is critical to be able to quantify the chemical state on the atomic-/nanoscale using element-specific electronic and structurally sensitive tools such as electron e ...

Cutting edge electron microscopes allow to probe the optical excitations in nanostructures with subangstrom spatial and femtosecond temporal resolution. In this study we discuss the prospects of probing the ultrafast out-of-equilibrium dynamics of plasmoni ...

The role of the crystal lattice for the electronic properties of cuprates and other high-temperature superconductors remains controversial despite decades of theoretical and experimental efforts. While the paradigm of strong electronic correlations suggest ...

Conventional electron microscopy operates with flat electron wave fronts. Employing attenuative or electrostatic phase plates allows transversally modulating the wave front, enhancing cross-sections of particular scattering channels. Utilization of light f ...

Recent advances in ultrafast technology enable both the study and the control of materials properties thanks to the ability to record high temporal resolution movies of their transformations, or the ability to generate new states of matter by selecting ad ...

An electron beam traversing a structured plasmonic field is shown to undergo diffraction with characteristic angular patterns of both elastic and inelastic outgoing electron components. In particular, a plasmonic grating (e.g., a standing wave formed by tw ...

Entanglement and correlation are at the basis of quantummechanicsand have been used in optics to create a framework for "ghostimaging". We propose that a similar scheme can be used in anelectron microscope to exploit the correlation of electrons with theco ...

Spatiotemporal electron-beam shaping is a bold frontier of electron microscopy. Over the past decade, shaping methods evolved from static phase plates to low-speed electrostatic and magnetostatic displays. Recently, a swift change of paradigm utilizing lig ...

Recent pioneering experiments combining ultrafast lasers with electron-based technology demonstrated the possibility to obtain real-time information about chemical bonds and their dynamics during reactions and phase transformation. These techniques have be ...

The ability to manipulate particles has always been a fundamental aspect for developing and improving scattering and microscopytechniques used for material investigations. So far, microscopy applications have mostly relied on a classical treatment of the e ...

Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates as information carriers in logic or storage devices thanks to their robustness, guaranteed by the topological protection, and their nanometric size. Currently, little is known about the influence of parameters su ...

We present inelastic light scattering data on a single crystal of magnetite (Fe3O4) across the Verwey transition. We identify anomalies of the lattice vibrations that originate from strong coupling to electronic excitations. We reveal spectroscopic signatu ...

Exotic magnetic textures emerging from the subtle interplay between thermodynamic and topological fluctuation have attracted intense interest due to their potential applications in spintronic devices. Recent advances in electron microscopy enable the imagi ...

The design and the characterization of functionalized gold nanoparticles supracrystals require atomically resolved information on both the metallic core and the external organic ligand shell. At present, there is no known approach to characterize simultane ...

While in 3D materials melting is a single, first-order phase transition, in 2D systems, it can also proceed via an intermediate phase. For a skyrmion lattice in Cu2OSeO3, magnetic field variations can tune this quasiparticle 2D solid into a skyrmion liquid ...

Femtosecond white-light continuum probe transient absorption and reflectivity measurements of bulk graphite and graphene paper are reported. In graphite, the relaxation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs happens through in-plane electron–electron and elec ...

Recently, the switching between the different charge-ordered phases of 1T-TaS2 has been probed by ultrafast techniques, revealing unexpected phenomena such as "hidden" metastable states and peculiar photoexcited charge patterns. Here, we apply broadband pu ...

A novel beam profiler based on microstructured scintillation resin is presented. The detector consists of a bundle of waveguides, featuring an active area of 30 x 30 mm2 with a fill factor of 50% and a pitch of 400 mu m. This configuration is obtained by c ...

The discovery of a novel long-lived metastable skyrmion phase in the multiferroic insulator Cu2OSeO3 visualized with Lorentz transmission electron microscopy for magnetic fields below the equilibrium skyrmion pocket is reported. This phase can be accessed ...
