The discovery of novel battery materials has been accelerated by advanced modeling and machine learning. However, their integration into battery cells remains constrained by the necessity for experimental validation. The status of development and validatio ...

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a key component of a lithium-ion battery forming during the first few dischage/charge cycles at the interface between the anode and the electrolyte. The SEI passivates the anode-electrolyte interface by inhibiting ...

Dendrite formation limits the cycle life of lithium and sodium metal anodes and remainsa major challenge for their integration into next-generation batteries, even whenreplacing the liquid electrolyte by a solid electrolyte. Voids forming in solid metal an ...

Compliance with good research data management practices means trust in the integrity of the data, and it is achievable by full control of the data gathering process. In this work, we demonstrate tooling which bridges these two aspects, and illustrate its u ...

Precipitation of (bi)carbonate salts during the electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) has been identified as a major cause of degradation and one of the main challenges to be overcome before implementing this technology on the industrial scale. Recently, t ...

Driven by the global demand for batteries with improved performance, cost efficiency, and sustainability, battery research has expanded rapidly during recent years, generating a surge in data which offers the potential to accelerate the discovery of new ba ...

With a global market share of about 90%, crystalline silicon is by far the most important photovoltaic technology today. This article reviews the dynamic field of crystalline silicon photovoltaics from a device-engineering perspective. First, it discusses ...

Solid-state batteries with lithium metal anodes are considered the next major technology leap with respect to today's lithium-ion batteries, as they promise a significant increase in energy density. Expectations for solid-state batteries from the automotiv ...

We calculate the maximal absorption enhancement obtainable by guided mode excitation in a weakly absorbing dielectric slab over wide wavelength ranges. The slab mimics thin film silicon solar cells in the low absorption regime. We consider simultaneously w ...

Li-rich oxide cathodes are drawing increasing attention as next-generation cathode materials for the development of high-energy-density Li-ion batteries due to their strikingly high capacities. However, transition-metal migration, irreversible structural p ...

The imprinting of random square based pyramidal textures with micrometric scale at the air/glass interface of thin film silicon solar cells is presented as an efficient alternative to anti-reflective coatings to minimize reflection losses at the cell entra ...

This review article delves into the growing field of solid-state batteries as a compelling alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries. The article surveys ongoing research efforts at renowned Swiss institutions a fundamental understanding of battery ...

Hydridoborates are an emerging class of solid electrolytes that offer high ionic conductivity, low density, solution processability, compatibility with metallic anodes, and high oxidative stability. Notably, certain Li + or Na + solid electrolytes, consist ...

An amorphous Si thin film with TiO2 encapsulation layer is demonstrated as a highly promising and stable photocathode for solar hydrogen production. With platinum as prototypical cocatalyst, a photocurrent onset potential of 0.93 V vs RHE and saturation ph ...

Pulsed electrolysis is an effective strategy to stabilize the high selectivity of Cu gas diffusion electrodes toward C >= 2 products, the decrease of which over time under continuous operation is often ascribed to (bi)carbonate precipitation. Here, we demo ...

We investigate the transfer of random nanostructures commonly used in thin film silicon solar cells onto inexpensive substrates, such as glass or flexible polyethylene sheets. Morphological and optical analyses of masters and replicas show the successful t ...

High aspect-ratio three-dimensional (3D) a-Si:H solar cells have been fabricated to enhance a light absorption path while maintaining a short carrier collection length. Substantial efficiency enhancement in 3D solar cells was achieved due to the boost in J ...
