Software development has taken a fundamental turn. Software today has gone from simple, closed programs running on a single machine, to massively open programs, patching together user experiences byway of responses received via hundreds of network requests ...

The most successful systems for "big data'' processing have all adopted functional APIs. We present a new programming model we call function passing designed to provide a more principled substrate, or middleware, upon which to build data-centric distribute ...

Functional programming (FP) is regularly touted as the way forward for bringing parallel, concurrent, and distributed programming to the mainstream. The popularity of the rationale behind this viewpoint (immutable data transformed by function application) ...

Programming systems incorporating aspects of functional programming, e.g., higher-order func- tions, are becoming increasingly popular for large-scale distributed programming. New frameworks such as Apache Spark leverage functional techniques to provide hi ...

In the face of the increasing trend in application development to interact with more and more remote services, and cognizant of the fact that issues arising from data consistency and task coordination are core challenges in distributed programming, the sys ...

In this paper we show a general mechanism, called self-assembly, for lightweight language extensions (LLEs). LLEs allow users to define generic operations or properties that operate over a large class of types. With LLEs it is possible, for example, for us ...

To patients who have lost the functionality of their hands as a result of a severe spinal cord injury or brain stroke, the development of new techniques for grasping is indispensable for reintegration and independency in daily life. Functional Electrical S ...

The most successful systems for “big data” processing have all adopted functional APIs. We present a new programming model we call function passing designed to provide a more principled substrate on which to build data-centric distributed systems. A key id ...

In the past five years, industry has overwhelmingly turned to open source as a primary means to build products and services atop of, with around 80% of surveyed companies acknowledging that they run on open source. 66% of companies say they would first c ...

Implementing machine learning algorithms for large data, such as the Web graph and social networks, is challenging. Even though much research has focused on making sequential algorithms more scalable, their running times continue to be prohibitively long. ...

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have launched a scale shift in higher education, with several individual MOOCs now boasting tens or hundreds of thousands of participants worldwide. Our MOOC on the principles of functional programming has more than 100, ...

Languages like F#, C#, and recently also Scala, provide “async” extensions which aim to make asynchronous programming easier by avoiding an inversion of control that is inherent in traditional callback-based programming models (for the purpose of this pape ...

Understanding a program entails understanding its context; dependencies, configurations and even implementations are all forms of contexts. Modern programming languages and theorem provers offer an array of constructs to define contexts, implicitly. Scala ...

The Lasp programming language provides combinator functions such as Union and Intersection for combining set CRDTs. When designing a CRDT combinator, care must be taken to ensure that the combinator is monotone separately in each of its arguments, so that ...

Type errors reported by compilers can sometimes be cryptic, or difficult to understand. In this paper, we propose a type debugging framework that exposes a high-level representation of the typechecking decision-making process that users normally do not hav ...

Edge computing promises lower latency interactions for clients operating at the edge by shifting computation away from Data Centers to Points of Presence which are more abundant and located geographically closer to end users. However, most commercially ava ...
