We study numerically and theoretically the gravity-driven flow of a viscous liquid film coating the inner side of a horizontal cylindrical tube and surrounding a shear-free dynamically inert gaseous core. The liquid-gas interface is prone to the Rayleigh-P ...

We analyse the force balance on a cylindrical drop in a Hele-Shaw cell, subjected to a Marangoni flow caused by a surface tension gradient. Depth-averaged Stokes equations, called Brinkman equations, are introduced and a general closed form solution is obt ...

We study the nonlinear evolution of the axisymmetric centrifugal instability developing on a columnar anticyclone with a Gaussian angular velocity using a semilinear approach. The model consists of two coupled equations: one for the linear evolution of the ...

Circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) contributes to body axis formation and brain development. Here, we investigated the unexplained origins of the CSF flow bidirectionality in the central canal of the spinal cord of 30 hpf zebrafish embryos and it ...

The near wake of wind turbines is characterized by the presence of the hub vortex, which is a coherent vorticity structure generated from the interaction between the root vortices and the boundary layer evolving over the turbine nacelle. Bymoving downstrea ...

We study a liquid jet that breaks up into drops in an external co-flowing liquid inside a confining microfluidic geometry. The jet breakup can occur right after the nozzle in a phenomenon named dripping or through the generation of a liquid jet that breaks ...

The global linear stability of a water drop on hot nonwetting surfaces is studied. The droplet is assumed to have a static shape and the surface tension gradient is neglected. First, the nonlinear steady Boussinesq equation is solved to obtain the axisymme ...

A variational technique is used to derive analytical expressions for the sensitivity of recirculation length to steady forcing in separated flows. Linear sensitivity analysis is applied to the two-dimensional steady flow past a circular cylinder for Reynol ...

We use the adjoint method to compute sensitivity maps for the limit-cycle frequency and amplitude of the Benard von Karmzin vortex street in the wake of a circular cylinder. rfhe sensitivity, analysis is performed in the frame of the semi-linear self consi ...

Droplet breakup is an important phenomenon in the field of microfluidics to generate daughter droplets. In this work, a novel breakup regime in the widely studied T-junction geometry is reported, where the pinch-off occurs laterally in the two outlet chann ...

In the present work, we revisit the temporal and the spatio-temporal stability of confined plane wakes under the perspective of the counterpropagating Rossby waves (CRWs). Within the context of broken line velocity profiles, each vorticity discontinuity ca ...

A counterintuitive destabilizing effect of the surface tension in planar wakes has been observed by Tammisola et al. ["Effect of surface tension on global modes of confined wake flows," Phys. Fluids 23, 014108 (2011)] and Biancofiore et al. ["Direct numeri ...

We use adjoint-based gradients to analyze the sensitivity of the drag force on a square cylinder. At Re = 40, the flow settles down to a steady state. The quantity of interest in the adjoint formulation is the steady asymptotic value of drag reached after ...

Swirling jets and vortices can both be unstable to the centrifugal instability but with a different wavenumber selection: the most unstable perturbations for swirling jets in inviscid fluids have an infinite azimuthal wavenumber, whereas, for vortices, the ...

Pendant drops suspended on the underside of a wet substrate are known to accumulate fluid from the surrounding thin liquid film, a process that often results in dripping. The growth of such drops is hastened by their ability to translate over an otherwise ...

Three-dimensional control is considered in the flow past a backward-facing step (BFS). The BFS flow at Reynolds number Re = 500 (defined with the step height and the maximum inlet velocity) is two-dimensional and linearly stable but increasingly receptive ...

Interfacial forces exceed gravitational forces on a scale small relative to the capillary length-two millimeters in the case of an air-water interface-and therefore dominate the physics of sub-millimetric systems. They are of paramount importance for vario ...

When a liquid film lies on a nonwettable substrate, the configuration is unstable, and the film spontaneously ruptures to form droplets. This phenomenon, known as dewetting, commonly leads to undesirable morphological changes. Nevertheless, recent works, c ...

Certain flows denominated as amplifiers arc characterized by their global linear stability while showing large linear amplifications to sustained perturbations. As the forcing amplitude increases, a strong saturation of the response appears when compared t ...

This study assesses the ability of a sensitivity-based, span-wise homogeneous control velocity distributed at the surface of a circular cylinder to cut down the cost of reducing drag by more classical techniques, e.g., base bleed and lateral suction. At Re ...
