In visual backward masking (VBM), a target is followed by a mask. Over the past decade, a VBM task, called the Shine-Through paradigm (ST), has been shown to be a very sensitive endophenotype of schizophrenia. In the present thesis, the electrophysiologica ...

Depression and schizophrenia are two psychiatric diseases with high co-morbidity. For this reason, it is important to find sensitive endophenotypes, which may disentangle the two disorders. The Shine-Through paradigm, a visual backward masking task, is a p ...

Research on schizophrenia typically focuses on one paradigm for which clear-cut differences between patients and controls are established. Great efforts are made to understand the underlying genetical, neurophysiological, and cognitive mechanisms, which ev ...

Objectives: The frontal hemispheric asymmetry and error-related components, as measured by EEG, are often considered to be biological correlates or “indicators of risk” for psychopathology. Here, we performed a meta-analysis to define specific patterns of ...

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous disorder and among other symptoms, patients have important visual impairments. Visual paradigms are therefore important tools to investigate the mechanisms of schizophrenia. During the last period of the NCCR, we have chara ...

Visual deficits are well documented in schizophrenia, especially in backward masking. In our task a Vernier is followed by a blank inter-stimulus interval (ISI) and then a grating mask. Observers indicate the direction of the Vernier offset (left vs right) ...

Masking is strongly deteriorated in schizophrenia patients and to a lesser extent in their healthy relatives. For this reason, masking is a good endophenotype. Here, we show the EEG correlates of masking across the schizophrenia continuum in order to tackl ...

Organisms use rewards to navigate and adapt to (uncertain) environments. Error-based learning about rewards issupported by the dopaminergic system, which is thought to signal reward prediction errors to make adjustmentsto past predictions. More recently, t ...

Electroencephalogram microstates are recurrent scalp potential configurations that remain stable for around 90 ms. The dynamics of two of the four canonical classes of microstates, commonly labeled as C and D, have been suggested as a potential endophenoty ...

In the past 10 years, our laboratory has proved the shine-through paradigm to be a very sensitive endophenotype for schizophrenia. The shine-through paradigm is a visual backward masking task, where the target is a vertical vernier followed by a 25-element ...

We investigated Gestalt perception in the intact visual field (VF) of hemianopia patients. Three patients and matched controls performed a Yes-No figure detection task. Gabor patches of one orientation, making up the outline of a square, were embedded in r ...

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous disorder and among other symptoms, patients have important visual impairments. Visual paradigms are therefore important tools to investigate the mechanisms of schizophrenia. We have previously shown that visual backward mas ...

In visual backward masking (VBM), a target is followed by a mask, which deteriorates performance on the target. Schizophrenia and first episodes patients show strong behavioral deficits, reflected in strongly reduced amplitudes of the EEG as compared to co ...

In visual backward masking (VBM), a target is followed by a mask that decreases target discriminability. Schizophrenia patients (SZ) show strong and reproducible masking impairments, which are associated with reduced EEG amplitudes. Patients with bipolar d ...

Visual backward masking (VBM) deficits are candidate endophenotypes of schizophrenia indexing genetic liability of the disorder. In VBM, a target is followed by a mask that deteriorates target perception. Schizophrenia patients and, to a lesser extent, the ...

Visual deficits are core deficits of schizophrenia. Classically, deficits are determined with demanding psychophysical tasks requiring fine-grained spatial or temporal resolution. Less is known about holistic processing. Here, we employed the Leuven Embedd ...

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous disease strongly influenced by genetic factors. We have previously shown that visual backward masking (VBM) is a very sensitive endophenotype of schizophrenia (Chkonia et al., 2010). Importantly, not only patients but also ...

Often, we intuitively assume that there are common factors in life. For example, we test people with a visual acuity test to determine whether they are allowed to drive a car or not- with the implicit assumption that the acuity test is representative of vi ...

Visual deficits are well documented in schizophrenia. For example, a Vernier is followed by a blank inter-stimulus interval (ISI) and then a grating mask. Observers indicate the direction of the Vernier offset (left vs right). Patients need ISIs that are 1 ...
